Portable Hunting & Ice Fishing Houses With Portability

By Judah R. Davis

The concept of ice fishing houses and portable canvas hunting enclosures are finally being more realized by manufacturers, and are indeed becoming something that is actually practical to use. This isn't something new however, outdoorsmen and women have been using canvas as a way to create shelter for centuries, and it's pretty clear that canvas is extremely durable, and that's what really counts in weatherproof shelters, as well as ice fishing houses.

Even the harshest of weather cannot touch marine upholstery. One of the higher grade canvases is known as the Aqualon marine Canvas. This consists of Vinyl Coated Polyester Canvas, weighing nine ounces per square inch. It also features a two ply polyester duck double. Basically, this means it is extremely tough, and will not give way easily. Along with that it is very stable and the weight is distributed properly.

As far as ice fishing houses go, these structures will be left out on the ice for a very long time. In fact they can even be out there for several months. As you can imagine, there going to be conditions that would be less than ideal for any other material, but the canvas holds up very nicely. In fact, it is so durable that it doesn't even lose it's color during conditions that would destroy most materials.

Whether you're in the north or the south, there is always going to be a good reason to use canvas shelters. When you are in the south, you need a place that is cool and free of the sun's deadly rays. These enclosures actually provide a well ventilated shelter, which is surprising. When you take it to the north however, it provides the opposite service, creating a warm shelter for you and your friends to take cover in.

Canvas tents and shelters are also used for modified hunting enclosures out in the open and can be camouflaged accordingly Canvas tents are used on safaris Lodges in Africa or for military base camps. The "Wall Tent" for every hunter on an extended hunt such as an Elk Trip, Big Horn Sheep, the Texas Big-Game hunt or a backcountry hunt on your own private land. Forget the cabin or the hunting shack and create the classic safari-style "Wall Tent" for the enthusiast who would create an outdoor alluring space. It is everything you need that evokes a passion for classic canvas - that tan A-frame style that can run from 8' to 16' in length depending on the size you need. This tent is made to meet the challenge of even the toughest weather.

Big Wall tents are just as tough as any other canvas enclosure, and are heavily reinforced at the stress points. It is easy to deploy, making it ideal for any hunter out there, as well as those who are interested in the outdoors. There are many items included with the tent, ranging from a Stove Pipe Shield, Sod Cloth, and a zippered door.

Ice fishing is extremely popular, especially in the northern most areas. It is simply easier to set up a canvas tent than it is to trek to a cabin or other type of shelter. These take up far less space and can be transported easily. They can even sit on a snowmobile sled. Four people can sit in these shelters and fish without a problem, meaning that you can take all of your gear to any fishing spot. You don't have to worry about it being overly cramped, because it is indeed tall enough to stand up in. There are two different versions out there, from a heavy canvas build, to a lighter and more portable version.

In sum, these structures are perfect for your next hunting or fishing season around the corner and are much more custom created than that of your local outdoor retailer. Invite your friends to your own shelter, there's room enough for four or more in many and they will see just what a canvas-crafted shelter is all about and how easy it is to operate. They can be shipped UPS or FEDEX, thrown in the back of a truck when packed up, and hauled by a quad (4-wheeler) or sled. For winter months, all are easily equipped with proper venting to accommodate for a portable generator to be used inside with a heater or cooking system. Make it an outdoor party! Create Canvas shelters and get geared up for your next ice fishing, hunting or outdoor adventure with the canvas shelter you need. - 31499

Master Angler Size Walleye Fishing

By Transcona U. Jadran

No doubt about those Pickerel and Walleye fish are just plain wily. Say what you can , but even the dumbest Walleye seems to be a lot smarter at evading novice fishing sports people and most everybody you know back "at the office" in the boring , hot city. The early bird gets the worm, and that smart aquatic creator gets your minnows and bait, Scott free.

Although often referred to in the sporting and hunting books and magazines as a "Walleyed Pike fish" this creature that our creator perfected for our angling pleasures is none of those what so ever. Massive specimens growing and attaining weights of 9 kg, the average size of most landed are in the 1- 3 pound class - with the the rank average being 1 kg in size and weight. Yet few of these see it back as pickerel fillets or even the more treasured delicacy of "Pickerel Cheeks. You can bet that these land smack dab, promptly in the middle of a hot frying pan or skillet. Poor fish. Yet these are not trophy sized - not yet. The smart Walleye get away for the fisherman to yet be taunted by them.

Although Walleye fish have a range across North America - the upper USA, Canada to the deep northern areas of the Canadian provinces or Manitoba as well as the Northwestern Kenora Ontario regions, they have been introduced throughout the world. The fame and notoriety of these master game fish and trophy status has spread worldwide through fish stocking and aquatic husbandry practices and techniques.

Catch one Walleye, odds and experience says that there are plenty of others from the same schooling group just loitering around waiting for you just to tease and taunt them with fresh bait or a bright colored lure or jig. Experienced anglers will teach you that greatest amount of cases that the Walleye and Pickerels hold near the bottom of the lake. Not unlike Goldeye fish and the patterns of landing trophy sized Goldeyes. When fishing at these depths watch your line (or lines if local fishing and game laws and regulations allow), for any lateral or unusual movements and strip. In these cases simply remove or retrieve your fishing line by hand. It seems that Walleye fish take their food very slowly, thus the hook must be set the very moment and second that a fish takes the fly or it will simply reject it.

In the end it can be said that this valued trophy fish - is a boom, a triumph and a bust. Wonderful to catch, great to eat, yet more than amazingly smart and wily. The reputation of the Walleye or its Canadian namesake - the Pickeral is more than just and well earned. - 31499

The Bedding of Deer

By Ethan O. Tanner

Deer beds are oval-shaped depressions in grass leaves, soft dirt or snow and are easy to recognize. Many beds are only used once, though beds in the prime, most concealed locations probably see intermittent use. Usually, whitetails return to the same general bedding area even if they shift their actual beds around.

It is not known how long deer actually sleep or whether deer sleep at all. Deer sometimes will lay their heads back on a flank or hind leg, their eye lids will droop and total alertness will be lost. For practical purposes, this is sleep. But there are other conclusions as to why deer lie down, other than to sleep. Cud chewing represents one basic reason why deer bed down. They also bed down to save some energy.

Deer are herbivorous cud-chewing animals related to cattle and sheep. They need to eat large amounts of food and as quickly as possible so that they can return to the safety of thick cover. Once in their beds, deer are able to regurgitate small packages of food, re-chew it and then swallow and digest it in a leisurely manner. Deer spend from six to seven hours a day chewing their cud, although they rarely spend more than twenty minutes consecutively in the cud-chewing process.

Deer that bed down in a snow storm will likely remain bedded, if undisturbed, until the storm passes, even if the storm lasts for many days. Snow can literally bury them, yet deer remain perfectly warm. The insulating qualities of their coats prevent snow that falls on them from melting, and the covering of snow acts as further insulation.

Deer bed down for as long as an hour and half at a time. Few systematic observations exist on the actual proportions of the day in which deer spend bedding. The more time deer have to spend traveling from a food source to a bedding ground will influence how long they bed. Undisturbed deer frequently bed near their food supply, such as in oak woods producing acorns, or in cornfields. Deer that are pushed seek more secluded spots and may spend more time in transit.

When preparing to lie down, deer often circle and often scrape with the forefoot on the selected spot. In winter, deer often try to scrape away snow to get down to leaves or grass. Weather and terrain greatly determine a deer's selection of a bedding place. During summer months, deer look for protection from extreme heat and pesky insects by lying in water. During the winter, whitetails seek protection from cold winds in swamps and low-lying thickets. In the fall, standing cornfields provide excellent hiding for bedded whitetails.

In general whitetails prefer high ground, such as knolls and ridges, where they can be sure of detecting the approach of danger well in advance of its arrival. They also frequently bed just under the crest of a hill rather than on the top, where the wind is less steady. They rely heavily on sound and smell, rather than sight, to herald the approach of a hunter. Actually, they use their bedding cover as a blind to slip out of existence.

Family groups tend to have their own particular places for bedding. Does, yearlings and fawns will bed within a few feet of each other. Mature bucks frequently bed in small patches of cover, little hideouts that are missed by many deer hunters. A big old buck can live to old age by bedding in cover that looks less than perfect. - 31499

Whitetail Feeding Patterns

By Ethan O. Tanner

The physical evidence of deer browsing on leaves, twigs, agricultural crops and natural fruits exemplifies a unique type of deer sign. It adds one more piece to the puzzle and affirms that an area deserves your closed examination. An area plentiful in food should also support a herd of deer. If you cannot find proof of feeding within an area, it may all the same serve as a travel corridor for deer, but you will have to find other signs, such as tracks and trails to affirm this.

To find evidence of feeding, you need to know what deer eat, which includes more than 6-different plants. As browsing animals, they randomly nip off small leaves, twigs and buds of many trees and shrubs. In northern forests, white cedar, maples, dogwood, aspen and blueberry are important natural foods. In the south deer prefer greenbriers, black gum, maples, honeysuckle, sumac and kudzu. Generally they prefer new growth. In starvation times, however, deer will eat pencil-thick stems.

Across whitetail country, the acorns of oak trees remain a key food source from late summer through winter. Fifty-four different species of oaks grow in North America, and almost every species produces acorns of value to deer. Botanists divide all oaks into two groups, white oaks and black oaks. In general, the white oaks produce "sweeter acorns", while black-oak acorns are somewhat bitter. Deer demonstrate preference for the very sweetest whites, such as the chinquapin, the post and swamp white oak. On the other hand, black oaks produce acorns more consistently than white oaks, and deer eat black-oak acorns in years when white oaks do not bear fruit.

Squirrels shuck the shell of the acorn. Deer eat acorns whole, so the physical signs of such a meal are subtle. If you look close, you may detect some disturbance in leaf litter associated with deer, or you may see some tracks in exposed dirt underneath oaks. Parallel wind rows of leaves usually indicate feeding activity of wild turkeys. With snow cover, you can easily recognize where deer have pawed down to find acorns.

Crucial agricultural crops that deer utilize include corn, soybeans, apples and alfalfa. Deer consume these foods in many different stages. In an apple orchard, for instance, deer will browse on apple twigs as well as eat the fruit itself. In a cornfield, deer will nip off the tops of the stalk and silk as well as the mature ear. Given a crack at shelled corn, they will chow down with relish. Often they will also take a cob of corn with them as they leave a feeder or field.

Deer lack incisor teeth in the front of the upper jaw; therefore they cannot nearly "bite" off stems. Instead, a deer used its lower canine teeth to press a stem or leaf against the upper jaw and then tears away a mouthful. The remaining stem or leaf exhibits a jagged edge. By contrast, neatly-pruned stems low to the ground suggests rabbit activity. Broken branches of apple and cherry trees in general represent the work of a bear. Blame the raccoon when you find broken-down stalks of corn. Deer are dainty eaters by comparison. - 31499

Historical And Movie Gun Leather

By Chris Dotson

Chisholms Trail Old West Leather is ran and owned by Alan and Donna Soellner. We are purely dedicated to recreating cowboy gun leather found in your most favorite old westerns, from the outlaws to the lawmen.

This is master work not just done sitting around, sipping on a malt scotch and laying back in a lazy boy. But requires of us to travel around and examine the places in which these items were used and worn. Just seeing the places and examining the rigs in which warn by legends such as Geronimo, John Wesley Hardin and Wild Bill Hickok was really exciting.

Our next great venture is the recreation of "Shane," a 1953 movie filmed in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The first process of this was to gather all photos of Alan Ladd from the movie as possible. Enlarging the size of these photos we were able to examine every aspect of the gun leather and construction. In our collection of researchers that include people that have collected Idian "Tufa" cast jewelry and buckles for more than 50 years and a foundry that has molded these items for Indians for the same amount of time.

We have also found a source and new friend that was at the filming of the movie and who provided us with hundreds of photos taken during the movie that are not available anywhere else. We will be traveling to Jackson Hole and actually touring the movie location shortly.

The result of our study has revealed that the Shane concho is huge. It is approximately 2 " tall and 3 wide. The buckle is even larger. Both the buckle and conchos were Tufa cast. This kind of Indian construction requires the craftsman to carve his design into a smooth block of Tufa sandstone. A flat second block is secured to the first one. Molten silver is poured into the mold. After the metal cools it is separated and the final product will be flat on the back and rounded in the front. To get the concho or buckle to curve to the body, the Indians would hollow out a cotton wood stump, place the flat metal over the depression and use a rounded limb as a striker to get the soft silver to take on the arched shape desired.

These silver conchos and buckles were very commonly attached to Western belts and western holsters. The Chisholms Trail concho set and buckle will the closest one to the original ever made and the first one ever cast in the same method.

A collection of the Shane holster and belt buckle photos, that only we have access to, are then put into our architectural AutoCAD program. That will open op the holster photos and provide us with a flat pattern to recreate the original.

The western Shane holster is already on our web site under the Historical button. Trust me it wears comfortably and is lightning to draw from. Rod Redwing, an Indian stunt man in the 1950s and fast draw coach for Hollywood designed this rig. Rod said that he actually bought the conchos and buckle from some Indians selling jewelry along the trail.

Donna as well as myself encourage you to visit our website and see for yourself the quality and care we put into our Cowboy gun leather. Don't forget to look at our buckle and jewelry section with both reproduction of western movie buckles as well as historical rigs worn in the American West. Ride for the Brand. - 31499

Deer Stand Guidelines

By Ethan O. Tanner

Most deer hunters are now hunting from tree stands. If you are unaccustomed deer hunting, or if you have been hunting for a while but have nevertheless not used this method, you should think about using a tree stand. The benefits of using a tree stand are that you will stay away from the deer's range of view, you will keep your odor hidden from the deer, and you will gain range of your view. You do need to take certain precautions, all the same, to be sure that you protect yourself.

There are many types of stands and most are safe to use. Some of these include ladder-type stands, climbing stands, and lock-on stands. You can also nail boards to a tree. No matter what type of stand you are using, know that accidents can happen. If a stand seems unsafe to you, do not use it. If you are thinking about using a new tree stand and you are far from your home or from people in general, wait. You would be unable to notify anyone in the event that you were injured. Do not take using a tree stand lightly.

You will benefit by becoming familiar with some of the ways by which hunters injure themselves on or around tree stands. Accidents happen when hunters fall asleep. It happens more often that you would imagine. Hunters also get injured when they slip while climbing in or out of a tree stand. You cannot avoid things like excess moisture on your boot, or an exceptionally damp step. The third way by which hunters suffer injury using tree stands is having a piece of equipment break. Nothing is 100% dependable. The best way to avoid severe injury from these unfortunate events is to wear a safety harness.

Many hunters know the danger of not using a safety harness, but they still use tree stands without one. Your safety harness will only serve you if you wear it. It is not good sufficient to put on the harness after you have settled into your stand. In fact, climbing into or out of your stand is when you are most probable to be hurt, so you need to be wearing it before you begin ascending your tree stand. It only takes a bit to secure and is well worth the hassle. A fall with a safety harness has minimal damage compared to one without a safety harness. The safety harness could mean the difference between a few bruises and a premature death.

There are a few additional steps you need to consider while preparing to use a tree stand for the first time. Tree steps and tie-on ladders are two favorite methods used by hunters. Some also use threaded steel steps for climbing.. If you are looking to cut costs, go with the steel steps. They are cheaper than the ladders. Test the steel step to make sure that it is strong, steady, and secure. Use threaded steel steps that will fully support your weight. If the threaded steps bend, hunters slip and injure themselves. Use a drill to make pilot holes for the steps. Some hunters prefer to use climbing stands instead of threaded steps, but they are more expensive and limit you to certain trees.

Consider using a tree stand as you hunt. It is an effective way to catch your prey off-guard. Both your body and your scent are above the deer's vicinity. It also allows for a broader view as you study the landscape. Tree stands do cause accidents, though. Take all of the necessary steps to prevent any major injuries. Use a safety harness to shorten the distance of your fall. Make sure that the steps you use to climb the tree are secure. Following these guidelines for using a tree stand ensures a safe and pleasurable hunting experience. - 31499

Martin Archery: A Quick Introduction

By Denzel Bowman

Having been involved in the archery making business since 1951, (where the business was started with nothing much more than a few tools and a kitchen table), Martin Archery is synonymous with the sport.

With over twenty five patents in their name, it is clear Martin Archery are flying in the right direction as straight as an arrow launched from their bows. Whether it is a traditional bow, the latest compound, something for the kids, or a competition piece specifically made, the quality is the only constant.

For the traditional bows, attention is still giving to the handmade techniques that were seen around the kitchen table; and it shows, with each bow unique and demonstrating its own characteristics.

It is possibly for their compound bows that they are really known however. Responsible for the introduction of a host of processes, techniques, innovations and concepts, they have made them their own. Martin Archery bows have always been reliable and strong of course; that they are now able to put these skills into practice on the lightweight models allows for even faster and truer flight of arrow.

They were behind the advances of the adjustable riser, and thus responsible for the biggest single improvement in arrow accuracy in recent years. That they also brought the world of archery double-helix bow strings and Teflon plated cable guards is indicative of their thoroughbred.

The compound bows are available in two ranges; Pro and Gold. The Pro series, as the name suggests is for the serious archery enthusiast, which needs and demands the very best. The Gold series is for those with less cash to spend, but also wanting top quality and value.

In each range a wide variety of bows are available. Highlights in the Pro range include the wonderfully named Warthog, which gives impeccable accuracy and control, and the MOAB Pro Hunter, which is as quiet as a whisper.

In the Gold series, the Leopard is an excellent choice without the best upper body strength, but still wanting to deliver their arrows in a fast an accurate way, whilst the Cheetah and the Bengal are both worthy of mention for those stepping up a gear on their hunting exploits.

With new lines coming on board all the time, and with a clear definition to providing only the very best for the increasing number of archers, Martin Archery puts its near sixty years of experience to excellent use. - 31499

Martin Archery: More Than One String To Their Bow

By Denzel Bowman

Having been involved in the archery making business since 1951, (where the business was started with nothing much more than a few tools and a kitchen table), Martin Archery is synonymous with the sport.

With over twenty five patents in their name, it is clear Martin Archery are flying in the right direction as straight as an arrow launched from their bows. For the traditional bows, attention is still giving to the handmade techniques that were seen around the kitchen table; and it shows, with each bow unique and demonstrating its own characteristics.

It is with their work on compound bows that they have really excelled however. They have not only contributed to its development, but have set the standard by which all such bows are judged; on strength, reliability and speed of arrow launch.

There are a host of different bows in each range, to suit all skills and techniques. A leading Pro bow, The Warthog gives great accuracy and control, whilst delivering the arrow at tremendous speeds; ideal for when consistency is needed. The MOAB Pro Hunter, an exceptionally crafted piece of kit, is the quietest in its class, ideal for when silence is all important.

In the Gold series of bows, Martin Archery provides a wide choice. Highlights here would have to be the Bengal and the Cheetah, whilst the Leopard is ideal for younger enthusiasts that may be lacking in upper body strength. All deliver the arrow exceptionally well, with speeds you would expect from such craftsmanship.

These are of course just a few mentions of their complete range; and really does not come close to doing Martin Archery justice for what they have achieved. 1951 is not a year remembered by many, but as they approach their 60th anniversary, it is a year many archers remember fondly. - 31499

Have Fun Still Hunting for Deer

By Ethan O. Tanner

Deer hunting on the move, or still hunting, is typically misunderstood as to what it is and how to go about it. It is following deer, not waiting on a stump or in a blind for the deer to come up to you. It can be the most gratifying deer hunting experience you can do. It can also be the most discouraging, since it is a skill which calls for you to slow everything - your sight, your breath and your walking gait. But the rewards go beyond the hunt to your better enjoyment of nature itself.

These few mere techniques can be used on your next hunt - whether you choose to still-hunt or not, the principles are the equivalent. These techniques will also make your deer hunt a richer experience. Quietly walking thru the woods enjoying nature is very relaxing and pleasing. It's all about: you're outdoors - love the scenery, hunting or not.

However, deer, and all prey species, have eyes designed to detect motion. Deer and all prey species have eyes on the side of their head, and this aids in perceiving motion first, long before the animal can make out whether what they see is a threat, or just some pattern-breaking motion in the woods. When still hunting for deer, we must adopt to the way they see. We must see motion first, patterns out of sync second, and the deer last. The only way to do this is to relax our focus and broaden our field of vision.

You see it all the time - the hunter walking through the woods as if he's hunting on rice paper. It doesn't work. As a hunter, you're going to make noise. Then again, so do deer and other game. So does anything dwelling and breathing in the woods. What you want to avoid is making the pulsing gait a hunter makes when he's running, usually after a deer, or doing everything he can to be quiet, when he doesn't yet see one.

Walking toe-heel is the way to walk, because the palm of your foot can be more flexible in its response to the softwood twigs and deadfall underfoot - like deer, whose hooves make relatively light contact with the forest floor. Walking heel-toe makes for a heavy, stiff step - a human step. Walking heel toe, take a few steps, pause, and, using the soft-focus described above, take in the environment, in a holistic way.

Be careful, if you find yourself entering in to a steady, rhythmic gait, break it up. You also want to avoid any obviously human sounds sounds coming from anything man-made, such as metal or hard plastic. Bottom line - brushing past an oak stump is o.k. marching in cadence is not, nor is that canteen banging against your hunting rifle strap buckle.

Finally, walk into the wind. Yes, this is rule 1. But several hunters, especially those used to staying in a relatively insulated hunting blind, blank out on this cardinal rule. I've stood with my bow drawn on a buck 10 yards away, with the buck distinctly trying to figure out what the heck this would-be rambo was up to - only to watch it bounce to life once the wind shifts, and thanksgiving was a bit - leaner that year.

Don't even bother still hunting on blustery days, with no prevailing winds. The bottom line, when you are hunting deer in this way, is to get used to is slowing yourself down, for hours at a time, and softening your focus to "deer hunt" for motion - not deer. But act like, see like, deer, become more a part of where you are, and you will reap many rewards - whether you take a deer or not. - 31499

The Process Of Skinning A Deer

By Ben Vinson

Whether you like it or not, you will need to skin the deer you bring home after hunting in the wood. Skinning a deer can be easier if you know the relevant information, especially about their physical characteristics and organs.

First of all, skinning a deer is not that difficult as you imagined before. Deer has protective membranes that separate their skin and muscle tissues, which make it easier for the skinning process.

Hang the deer down to start the skinning process. This way, it is easier to clean the deer from dirt and dust it gets during the journey home, and also from the skin itself. Do not wait too long for the skinning. Two hours is the maximum time. If you wait more than two hours, the skin may be more difficult to drag and the meat will no longer be fresh.

When skinning, make sure you use a really sharp knife so that you do not go through the same part over and over again. Stab somewhere between the deer's large tendon at the lower leg and bone. After that, use your finger to feel the lump.

After that, find two parts of the double joint at the lower part of body to be torn. The leg should then be broken to ease the skinning process.

The next step is to move on the upper side and make more holes near the deer's tendon and front legs. Keep focusing on the holes. If they are good, it will be easier for you to skin the deer later.

After that, we move deeper to the front legs. Break and make openings just like you do with the lower legs. Get inside the skin near the lower leg openings and pull it off to start the skinning process.

Since deer's skin is tight, you may find it hard to pull it off at the beginning. But the process will be easier after some parts are pulled. Just keep to the techniques.

For a standard rule, skinning a deer can take from ten to fifteen minutes depends on how fast you can do that. It is just one step closer to enjoy and show off your hunt. It may be hard for hunt novices, but they will learn quickly after few times of hunting. - 31499
