Binoculars Harness - Can Your Binoculars Survive Flight?

By Bart Icles

Can binoculars land safely after flight? All bird watchers know birds land gracefully, softly, at least most of the time. On the other hand, your binoculars do not have wings or feet, when they start flying, they crash hard into the ground. You can expect scratches and fractures. With a neck strap you may have the pleasure of finding out. Bird watchers using a binoculars harness don't worry when they move, bend, and twist quickly. Their binoculars are safe in front of them through the entire motion.

Do binocular lenses survive sticks and stones? As you move around looking for birds your binoculars swing and sway at every motion on the end of the standard neck strap. One wrong move and they run into a branch or rock outcropping. The one wrong turn suddenly turns your binoculars into scrap metal and shattered glass. Your day is ruined. If you were wearing a binocular harness strap, you would still be enjoying the day, since your binoculars don't swing around uncontrolled.

Do binoculars create huge neck muscles? We all know they don't, but it feels like they should. A weekend of bird watching can leave you with sore and tense neck muscles. Your neck is not accustomed to carrying weight, and does not adjust well. When you switch to a bino harness the weight moves from your neck to your shoulders. Your shoulders are strong and ready for the action of the day.

Does the sound of your binoculars clicking around on your chest attract birds? Birds can be very sensitive to sound. Even small sounds can bring them to attention. You want to see birds moving naturally, playing, and singing. You're not looking for birds taking flight in panic. Your Nikon binoculars will rest quietly against your chest with a Nikon Prostaff binocular harness. There is no extra swing, swaying, bumping, and thumping to alert birds to your presence. You are in control of your binoculars, they are ready for action at all times.

Does a binocular harness make you look strange? Yes, they do make you look very unusual. You will need to control your smile as you are enjoying your weekend of bird watching. People don't understand you are enjoying your best weekend ever. They just think your smile is a sign of craziness. Relax, they will soon be joining you with their own harness when they discover how well a harness works. - 31499

Using A Binocular Harness Can Save Your Binoculars From Disaster

By Bart Icles

You're walking through the brush, heading to your deer stand. You see some tracks and bend down to take a closer look, and smack, your binoculars come flying forward and smash through the brush. You quietly curse as you check the lenses to make sure you did not scratch them this time. A standard neck strap does nothing to prevent the wild swinging of your binoculars, if you want to protect your investment you need a binocular harness.

It's not only when we bend over the binoculars come into danger. Every step we take with a neck strap they wave back and forth, seeking out a twig, stick, or other obstruction to get hung up on. Even when we are climbing up into the stand they swing around getting in our way. This is the kind of troubles a binocular harness solves. Your binoculars are held safely against your chest, out of the way, and not swinging around wildly.

If you're like most deer hunters, your Bushnell or Nikon binoculars are an essential part of your day of hunting. You use them for spotting deer as they move through your hunting area. Watching for them to come into range, and into a clear line of sight for a shot. When you're ready to switch to your rifle or bow, the last thing you need is binoculars swinging back into the way. When you lower your binoculars while wearing a binocular harness they are instantly back against your chest, out of the way. Your hands are free to prepare for your shot.

It's not just hand freedom you should be concerned about. With a neck strap those binoculars might just swing and bump something else making noise. As soon as you hear that noise, you can just sit back down and relax, because so did the buck, he is off and running. A binocular harness is going to allow you faster motion with your binoculars, because you know they are not going to start swinging around.

Many hunters find a strap around their neck quickly becomes uncomfortable, especially as the strap slides around with the movement of the binoculars. A binocular harness changes the weight from your neck, onto your shoulders and around your back. You'll be more comfortable for the entire morning hunt.

For the best safety, security, and better hunting, a binocular harness is a great aid in your hunting accessories. - 31499

Buck Folding Hunter 110: A Straight Cut Review

By Allen Brown

Knives have been an important part of every single society for a number of years. Through the years things have changed. We have moved on to more powerful weapons and different ways of hunting. In spite of that though, the knife is still used in hunting, and in many cases for various everyday activities. There is one knife that has stood out through the years and that is the Buck Folding Hunter 110.

This specific knife first arrived on the market back in 1962, and at the time it was the center of attention in that it was one of the first knives to feature a folding handle, and of course 1962 was also the year in which manufacturers began paying attention to knife safety for the first time. Not only did the Buck Folding Hunter 110 feature a folding handle, but it also included a special safety release so that the knife couldn't fold into the closed position accidentally. Obviously, this was an extremely important feature in that it effectively prevented you from being able to get your fingers caught between the blade and the handle.

Apart from the introduction of a safety release, the knife also had several other qualities which made it stand out. For example, it had a wood grained handle that made it easy to grip, and because the handle had an elongated design, it was not only easy to hold, but it was also comfortable.

The blade is made of 420 HC steel, and the overall weight is 7.2 ounces. To keep the knife from falling apart it is held together by strong rivets and when it is closed it is approximately 4 7/8 inches in length. You know that you want this knife, but how would you go about getting it?

One of the main things to look out for when you're looking to purchase one of these knives is that the market is virtually flooded with cheap imitations. While many of these may have the same good looks, you can be rest assured that their quality is inferior. Even so, you may be lucky enough to get some use out of one of the cheap imitations, but you certainly won't be able to rely on it for any length of time.

When you decide to buy from any specific seller, make sure that you take a long hard look at their credentials. If you are buying online, see if the seller has any sort of feedback. You will only want to buy from a seller that has positive feedback, because with any less you might end up getting a substandard product. This is far from what you want, so think about it! Buy a knife that is of high quality. - 31499

Tracking Wounded Deer

By Ethant O. Tanner

Always Mark your shot. Watch for response from the animal after you shoot for signs of a hit. Watch the deer until it is out of sight and listen for further actions. Identify any landmarks to help in marking the trail and the path of the wounded animal.

Different theories exist on waiting for extensive periods of time or begin trailing right away. Waiting an hour before trailing will allow animal to lie down without being disturbed. Immediate tracking will ensure the animal's wounds do not have time to clot allowing for a more steady blood trail.

Use biodegradable paper to score the blood trail. The start of the trail should be marked and each area of blood found. Keep in mind, blood can be found on the ground and on nearby grass, bushes and trees up to 3 feet off the ground.

Tracks and stride length in addition to blood trail can aid in finding your downed game. Use a stick to measure the animals stride length or a piece of biodegradable paper to measure the track. In addition to blood these clues can help you find your buck.

Blood tells a story if you know how to listen to the tail.. The type, color and amount of blood can help tell you how good of a hit you made on the animal. From time to time the blood trail is nowhere to be found due to the animal doubling back. Walk concentric circles around your last marker until the trail can be reestablished or the animal is found.

Many times mortally injured deer will not follow a common trail but will crash aimlessly through their surroundings. Often they will run down hill or towards water rather than follow well-known trails.

An option modern archers have are arrow tracking devices that attach a string to the loosed arrow. Earlier versions of these devices were less trustworthy, but with advances in design these devices can help you hunt wet conditions and find out downed game. Another thing archers can do to help ensure tracking success in finding their quarry is to shoot brightly colored arrows given better visibility of your hit. Recently arrow nocks have been made to blink after being released from the bow aiding in finding the beginning of the blood trail. - 31499

The Kershaw Blur Razor Sharp Review

By Jimmy Fuller

Kai USA is probably one of the most reputable knife manufacturers in the world, and their flagship Kershaw knives brands have a solid reputation of being manufactured to the highest standards. As a result, millions of people around the world have become loyal fans, but this also means that they have a high level of expectation when they purchase a Kershaw knife. If you've had the opportunity to inspect a Kershaw Blur knife, then you'll no doubt have noticed just how much attention has been paid to detail in order to make the knife aesthetically appealing, while at the same time ensuring that its quality and effectiveness is in no way compromised.

The vast majority of Kershaw knives tend to have a naturally shaped handle, but the new Kershaw Blur sports a much flatter and sleeker design. In order to accommodate this, they have used a special tape on the grip so that the knife can still be handled effectively without having to worry about it slipping out of the hand.

The knife handle is light and durable since it is made from anodized aluminum-the same type of metal that is used for building airplanes. The approximate weight of the Kershaw Blur is about 4.2 oz which is impressive when one considers that the knife is about 4.5 inches long.

The blade is made from stainless steel thereby making it strong and resilient against corrosion. The knife is shipped with the blade already sharpened so you will not need to do that on your own. When compared to other knives used in similar conditions, the sharpened blade of a Kershaw Blur retains its sharpness for a much longer duration.

One of the things that some Kershaw die-hards might have a problem with when it comes to the Kershaw Blur might be the integration of a thumb-stud as opposed to the usual trigger. Strictly speaking, this in itself might not be a problem and the main issue here would likely be the discomfort experienced Kershaw knife veterans that might have gotten used to the trigger now having to contend with this new mechanism.

Kershaw die-hards will also be pleased to discover that the Speed Safe concept has been retained, and so has the ability to open the knife with just a single hand.

One thing to bear in mind however is that even though the knife blade has been manufactured from stainless steel, under certain circumstances and conditions a certain amount of rust could end up accumulating, but unless the knife to spends most of its life in a very humid environment, there's not much chance that this will ever happen.

Rather than limiting buyers with regards to color, the manufacturers have made the knives available in black, gray, and red. Depending on where you purchase your knife, you can expect to pay in the region of $60 to $65, and they can be purchased online or from your local store. - 31499

Carrying a Bowie Knife on a Flight

By Dylan Sabot

Carrying a Bowie knife on a flight is obviously something which will involve several complications. Even before the overall tightening of security at airports in recent years, it would have been almost certain that any airline would have prohibited an individual from entering a plane with such a knife, and, likely, they would have been in some trouble for having tried at all.

Carrying the weapon on one's belt or somewhere else on one's person while at the airport is prohibited. When one heads to the airport, their Bowie knife should be secured in a suitcase and inaccessible. This inaccessibility is a good bench mark of whether or not a knife is being carried correctly. No one should be armed anywhere near an airport but it is permissible to transport arms in one's luggage.

The Bowie knife will be subject to any laws that apply once it and its owner are back on the ground. Remember this and check ahead to make sure that the knife is even legal where one is headed. There are some places where certain weapons are specifically against the law. It is not the airline or the TSA's responsibility to inform passengers of the laws in other places, so be sure to be informed ahead of time.

In the luggage, the knife must be sheathed securely. This is usually no problem where Bowie knives are concerned as they are sheath knives by design. It's a good idea to wrap or box the knife within the luggage, as well. Even though a sheath protects the blade, the hand guard and handle still might snag on clothing or other items and cause damage or be damaged. Make sure the knife cannot slide out of the sheath, in any regard, and count on the luggage being handled a bit roughly from time to time by baggage handlers.

A Bowie knife, if it is a particularly expensive model, may be better shipped than taken on a plane. While most airlines provide excellent security, there are incidents when items are taken out of passenger's luggage, particularly on international flights. A Bowie has all the qualities of something desirable to a thief: light, expensive and easy to sell. Luggage cannot be locked on a flight, so shipping may be more secure than baggage. - 31499

Essential Turkey Hunting Equipment

By Ethan O. Tanner

Due to the growing popularity of turkey hunting and ever-increasing numbers of turkey hunters, there is a huge variety of hunting equipment available these days. In the past, Turkey hunting was a much simpler activity. The hunter, dressed in his usual clothes and hat, places his favorite slate call, box call, wing bone or scratch box into his jacket en route out of the house. He collects his double-barreled shotgun and a few shells in his pocket before walking out the door.

This is him, the turkey hunter - entirely ready to do battle with a wary old gobbler. But what other gear will he have with him? Having lots of options and alternatives is a very good thing when it concerns hunting equipment.

Today's modern turkey hunter has more choices than he ever had. But sometime, it becomes overwhelming to a beginner. Before going to hunting, you have to decide first what you are going to use to haul all of your equipment. This will also help determine the type and amount of gear you carry with you into the woods. Turkey Vest, Back pack, and fanny pack are the three basic choices for packing turkey hunting gear.

These vests come in many different ways including the full vest or jacket style. Some prefer vests since there are many separate pockets and the game bag on the back that lets you carry decoys well plus the turkey if you get one. A vest is also another outstanding to organize your basic turkey gear with one hunting garment.

Backpacks allow you to carry much more gear than the vests. They also can be removed and even used as backrest if necessary. The least expensive option are the fanny packs. They are popular to many hunters since you can carry some gear but you are not weighed down as much as with a backpack or vest. They also provide quick access to everything inside.

Many hunters will carry along a laser range finder and this is perfect, especially for those hunting with a bow. Your laser range finder will provide comfort and knowledge on how far your potential shot may be for that big old Tom.

Do you need to carry that lots of calls with you? No, absolutely not, but if you want to, there are now vests available that allow you to carry them and much more.

Here are some basic needs and optional gears you might consider: Basic needs include shot gun, shotgun shells, full camo outfit including cap, and favorite calls. Turkey tag pencil or pen to sign tag. Gloves, head net or face mask. Bug spray for mosquitoes and ticks. Water and drinks, compass, toilet paper and knife are some of the few things that are usually brought.

Optional gears include decoys, turkey tote, extra set of gloves and facemask, extra strikers for slate calls, and other local calls like owl, gobble tube, hawk, goose, coyote, peacock and woodpecker. Leather type multi-purpose tools, flashlight, matches, cell phone, walkie talkie, 2-way radio, GPS, topo map and aerial photos for hunting area. Rain gear, binoculars, camera, camcorder, tripod, laser range finder, ratcheting pruners, folding saw, ground blind or square piece of camo cloth, Snacks/food, moistened hand wipes, seat or pad and snake bite kit.

Having all these gears will for certain not vouch that you would become the best turkey hunter in the world, but they can help advance your chances of having a turkey dinner when you go home for the day. Revel in your Turkey Hunting outdoor experience. - 31499

Don't Get Caught Hanging From A Cliff - Use A Binocular Harness

By Bart Icles

You've decided to make a big bird watching trip. You decided to head into the mountains, and do a little climbing for an extra special weekend of bird watching. You are far from the safety of the park, and the local trails. As you are climbing up the outcropping to get closer, you feeling it slipping. There is nothing you can do, the sliding has started, but suddenly comes to a halt. You stare in bewilderment, seeing your binoculars hanging from the neck strap on the edge of a cliff. If you had only been wearing a binocular harness.

Maybe the story is a little extreme, but hopefully you get the point. A neck strap is not designed to keep your binoculars safe while you climb, and move about in more than simple ways. If you want to really see special birds you sometimes need to get out of the park. You will need to know you can keep your binoculars safely out of the way, but close at hand for watching birds when you locate them.

Putting your binoculars away in a backpack is not going to work. Birds don't wait while you unpack. They take flight and are gone before you have a chance to see them. Using a Nikon Prostaff binocular harness, or one for your Bushnell optics lets you keep your binoculars safely out of the way, but have instant access.

There is one other big issue which comes into play when you head out for a little more extreme bird watching, neck fatigue. You already feel it in the park after a full day. Your neck starts aching from carrying the binoculars on a strap. If you use a binocular harness strap your neck is not being used to carry the weight, the responsibility moves to your powerful shoulders and back. Whether you are in the park, or in the mountains, you should enjoy the entire day without strain. A bino harness will make sure it is possible.

The worst part of a neck strap is the constant swinging of your binoculars. This is troublesome enough in a park, but out on a trail it is simply unsafe. It increases the opportunities to get hung up on obstacles either damaging your binoculars or hurting yourself. A binoculars harness keeps everything out of the way, with no swinging. You will be amazed at the difference. You won't get caught watching your binoculars hanging from a cliff, waiting for the tumble. - 31499

Hunting Knives

By Neal Elliott

Every hunting enthusiast should always have the most valuable tool of the trade within easy reach: a good hunting knife. It can be tough to make a choice about the knife that is right for you - particularly when you know little about the variety of knife styles and the designs of blades made for specific tasks on the hunting trail.

The bowie is considered a universal knife among hunters. Named for the long, aggressive knife used by frontiersman James Bowie during the state of Texas fight for independence in the 1800s. No respectable hunting knife collection is without a Bowie knife. As a tool, the blade of the knife is known for being able to slice through small bones and muscle without becoming dull enough to need immediate sharpening. One style of Bowie knife that has been trendy is one that has serrations close to the base, making it a cinch to get through game flesh in a flash. Skinning and gutting game are two hunting tasks that almost require the precision of a Bowie knife.

While the fixed blade Bowie knife is a nice knife to have, there are several folding hunting knives, which you can take with you. Since the Bowie knife is fixed blade, its best won on the hip in a sheath to protect it from damage. However, folding hunting knives can be invaluable on the field as they can be placed in the pocket of your jacket or vest for quick access. Gerber Hunting Knives are a prime example of a folding hunting knife, and they have been around since the early 1900s. Gerber knives generally follow the Bowie pattern, but since they can be folded, they are much more portable.

Another set of knives that are popular are the Buck Hunting Knives which are popular for being able to cut through thick stuff like wire and soft areas like meat. It sharpens itself thanks to its edges that make them perfect for any hunting trip. This comes in handy especially for those sudden hunting trips and you do not have enough time to sharpen your knives, simply pick up the Buck Hunting Knife and you are good to go.

For the hunter who wants a bit of customization with their equipment, it is possible to have a handmade hunting knife made from any number of materials, though the most popular material is buck antler. These blades are fixed blade knives, which are fitted into a handle of dear antler, which can be either from a kill you have made yourself, or from antler from another kill. Most hunters take pride in having a knife, which is made from the antlers of one of their deer, as it is a very powerful trophy.

If you have a family member who loves hunting, it would be a great idea to give them a set of Gerber Hunting Knives, Folding Hunting Knives, Fixed Blade Hunting Knives, and a lot more. If you have some idea as to what hunting activities your family loves to indulge with you may do some research as to which knife would be perfect for them. You may even give them Handmade Hunting Knives as a present with their names engraved on it. That would be cool.

For added customizations, you may even give them with decorative knives that are mainly just for display. Normally these hunting knives are handmade, filled with different stones on the handle or they could even have metal engraves that any knife collector would love.

If you have a hard time figuring out which kinds of knives to give your loved ones, perhaps the easiest one to get them is a basic set of hunting knives since most stores carry them. It would also give you an idea of the different kinds of knives and later on, you could have the better versions of these knives.

By understanding the different styles, you will purchase a knife, which fits in well with the collection of your gift recipient, and you will be remembered for providing a wonderful gift for a wonderful occasion. Choosing between knives, which can be used functionally out in the field, and one, which is made to be displayed in the home, is purely your decision. Will your husband or father prefer to see his knife daily, or would he prefer to have it in his pocket, ready to be used at a moment's notice?

In the end, any hunter or even a simple angler would love to receive a collection of hunting knives. After all, one could never have enough knives right. - 31499

Fundamentals Of Skinning A Deer

By Ethan O. Tanner

While it may not be the most exciting job, skinning a deer is important when returning from a hunt or when still actually on the hunt. If you have taken down the deer, elk, antelope or goat of your dreams on your hunting trip, you will need to know how to skin the deer and how to get the most out of your harvest. If you are just learning about hunting, this information will also be very useful for that important day on which you will finally be able to skin a deer.

Essentially, the act of skinning a deer is thought of to be quite simple. The basic fundamental guideline behind it is to follow the built-in guidelines of the body of the deer and work from that standpoint. The skin and muscle tissues of the deer are naturally separate from one another because of the protective membranes, making the process of skinning a lot more like following a built-in blueprint than like trying to lift a rug in the dark. The skin should easily peel from the meat because of these membranes, creating little risk of tearing the skin or tearing the meat.

The most important aspect in skinning a deer is the use of your hands and the pull of your own body weight. With these two integral tools, the phase of skinning a deer becomes incredibly easy. In fact, skinning a deer can typically be completed in about fifteen to twenty minutes without any serious complications.

You should first hang the deer. This makes it easier for you to use your body weight in the skinning procedure and creates a greater leverage point for skinning the deer. This also ensures that the meat will stay clean. Whether you hang the deer from the neck or from the legs, there is no particular difference. It is essential to try to skin the deer within an hour or two of the deer's death, making the skinning process a whole lot easier and faster.

Your knife should be very sharp. There is truth to the saying that a dull knife will cut you. Supposing the deer is hung by the legs, find the large tendon connecting the lower leg segment to the rest of the deer's leg. You should push a whole with your knife in between the tendon and the bone there, and then use your fingers to feel the lump that is created by the deer's double-jointed bone. Once you have found that lump, cut the lower leg at the lower end of the two parts of the double joint. Cut the skin and the tendons here and then snap the deer's leg over your own leg, using your body's leverage to break it.

After you have broken the deer's legs in this fashion, make several incisions around and near the tendon areas. There should be a whole between the tendon and the bone of the lower leg, as well as several incisions near the front legs. You will then sever and snap the front legs as well, making the skinning process easier. After you have made the initial incisions, you will begin the process of undressing the deer of its skin. Use your finger tips and thumbs to get inside the skin near the lower leg incisions and begin to pull the skin off.

Essentially, the pulling of the deer's skin should work a lot like pulling pair of blue jeans off. It may seem a little bit awkward, but the layer of meat revealed below the skin should be a more than ample reward. After the skin is pulled off, you will notice the meat is ready to go and the parting of the meat thanks to the deer's membrane has made the whole process a lot easier than you ever thought possible.

Skinning a deer, while not particularly romantic, is a process that should take around ten to fifteen minutes and relies almost entirely on your own body weight and strength to pull the skin off of the deer's body. It really is that simple. - 31499

Once you have successfully found a scrape or rub line the next task is locating your surprise assault point. As always think about the wind bearing and topography of your surroundings before placing a blind or tree stand. Is your location an area deer are likely to visit on their way to feeding zones or are they likely to pass through heading off to bedding area? After taking into thought these factors you will be better prepared to decide on the area to hunt.

Is triumph eluding you while hunting a rub line or scrape? Try hunting during different hours of the day. During the rut, a buck's movement patterns are more likely to revolve around a hot doe than his stomach. Many bucks are shot every year in the rut during the middle of the day.

If altering your hunting hours doesn't work or just is not possible there are other things that you can try to get the buck you have been hunting within range. If a friend has only just harvested a buck from another area ask them for the buck's tarsal gland. Be careful not to contaminate the gland with human scent. This can be done by handling the gland with gloved hands and transporting it in a sealed container. This gland can be hung close to a scrape or rub that you are hunting. The scent of a new buck in the area will bring the trophy buck you have been chasing out to investigate.

Another way to get a quick look of the trophy you have been pursuing is find a different buck's scrape. Again with gloved hands and a sealable container harvest some of the urine scented dirt and droppings from the other scrape. Then place what you collected on top of the scrape you have been hunting. The protective buck in your area will come to see which one of his rivals is trying to steal his does.

Scent is an important part of hunting most animals. Scent is extremely important during the rut and while hunting rub lines or scrapes. Always hunt the downwind side of the rub or scrape. There are many scent attractants on the market that come in liquid and solid states. Bucks may be enticed into visiting their scrapes more often by adding doe-in-heat urine to their scrapes.

One other strategy to get bucks to move into view is to create a drag line. This can easily be done by soaking a scent free cloth attached to about 8 feet of string or light-weight rope in doe-in-heat urine or a similar attractant. Drag this cloth across near by trails leading into your shooting lanes always being mindful of where you step to avoid contaminating the area with your human scent. After you have created your drag line hang the cloth from a nearby tree for extra scent attraction. - 31499

Find Value In Your Deerskin Hide

By Ethan O. Tanner

An important product of your deer hunting is the leather hide. You may send this hide into several tanners, or tan it at home by yourself. Here are ways to make your deer hide useful and valuable.

After removing your hide, roll it out and rub about two pounds of salt on the flesh side. Then fold the edges to the middle, roll up hair out and place in a box. There are many tanners throughout the nation that will tan this deerskin and manufacture leather accessories from the tanned hide.

A small deer,80 to 135 lbs dressed, will give you 6 to 8 square feet of leather. A medium deer,135 to 180 lbs, will yield 9 to 11 square feet of leather and a large deer will yield 12 to 16 square feet of leather.

The tanned leather can be used in gloves, handbags, garments, wallets, moccasins and other leather accessories. Tan your hide and reap the benefits of soft, strong deerskin leather.

For a hair on wall hanging, it is fairly easy and practical to hard-tan the hide yourself. This leaves the hide stiff, rather than soft. Essentially, hard tanning is as practical as soft-tanning if the hide is going to be used as a wall hanging.

One other neat use for your deer hide is to save and dry out the tail. Cut the tail off, and save it for tying trout flies and buck tail lures and crafts

Leather Unlimited in Belgium Wisconsin has several easy do-it yourself tanning kits. These kits may be used to tan your deer hide or other hides into useful and valuable hair on fur hide or leather hide. Thes kits are an excellent way to create value from your deer hides and craft useful leather and leather products for your enjoyment. - 31499

Bird Watching Can Be A Pain in The Neck Without a Binocular Harness

By Bart Icles

It is the right season of the year. You know they are migrating through your area. You also know you may be out in the countryside all day trying to spot those elusive migratory birds. As you hike around the area, you realize the sport you love is becoming a real pain in the neck. Your binoculars strap has been rubbing, and pulling on your neck all day long. The trip is still worth it. It is not the fault of the binoculars or your techniques, it all due to the poor design of the strap. Your neck would feel great if you were using a binocular harness.

A binoculars harness takes the weight off your neck and distributes it to your shoulders and back. Parts of your body which were designed to bear weight. The binoculars will no longer be swinging back and forth, since they are being supported efficiently with four points of support. Your hike will be easier and more comfortable with a bino harness.

Many birdwatchers will put the binoculars back in their case when they don't have an immediate need to use them. The biggest threat most times is caused by the strap. It feels insecure because the binoculars are always bumping and swinging around. It is insecure, because it would be easy to swing them into a branch and end up with a scratched or broken lens. Using a binocular harness strap keeps your optics nearly motionless, pulled up against your body. They won't be swinging around and getting bumped.

Something a birdwatcher needs to consider is the motion and sound from swinging binoculars. Birds can be fidgety. They are watching and listening for any signs of a predator. Your swinging binoculars could help signal an escape response, and suddenly your hopes of observation are gone. You can minimize the movement of your Nikon binoculars with a good quality Nikon Prostaff binocular harness. Just adjust the harness properly and you'll have very little extra movement while you position yourself for viewing.

If you extend your birdwatching into photography, your binoculars harness can double as a very effective harness for your camera. It will be held just as securely, with minimal motion. When you are serious about birdwatching you want a harness to make your day more enjoyable and fun. Having your binoculars or camera always ready is going to increase your opportunity for great sightings. - 31499

A Binocular Harness Will Save Your Neck

By Bart Icles

There he was hanging from the tree. The neck strap had caught on a branch as he fell. It snapped his fall to a sudden stop. His body slammed into the tree, swinging from the strap. Whew, good thing "he" is only your $300 Nikon binoculars. It is too bad the binoculars are broken. The good news, it wasn't around your neck. Why did you take them off anyway? Was your neck sore? Were the binoculars in your way again? With a Nikon Prostaff binocular harness, both you and the binoculars would have survived the day.

How many of us have removed our binoculars and either laid them down, or hung them from an outcropping on the tree? Admit it, you have probably done it. A neck strap is not very comfortable. The binoculars get in the way when you lean over to grab your thermos. Once you get frustrated dealing with them, you take them off. When you are wearing a properly adjusted binoculars harness you would just wear the binoculars all day. They would be comfortable. The binoculars would stay out of the way. No need to look for that "safe" hanger for your binoculars.

While you were in the tree, did you see the 10-point buck on the horizon? If you binoculars are hanging from the tree, or sitting on the stand, probably not. If they were hanging on your binocular harness strap you would have quick access, and would have seen the buck.

Using a bino harness is not just about convenience and comfort, it really can be an issue of safety. There is less opportunity to get your strap caught on an obstacle when it is remains safely against your body. With a neck strap you have a loose swinging strap hunting for a place to get caught. Most times the strap just gets in the way, but even that is a safety concern. When you are climbing into a tree stand you do not need anything impeding your climb. The binoculars on a harness are out of the way, and your hands and arms are free for the climb.

You remember how you loved using your binoculars when you first bought them. Then after a few outings you started mumbling about them being a hassle to haul around. You can have the old feeling back when you keep them in the right place, and ready for action. No more binoculars flying from trees, only safe, enjoyable spotting of game on the move. - 31499

Hunting Blinds and How They Work

By Davis Stonaker

Unless you are a true hunting enthusiast, chances are that you have never come across a hunting blind, tree stand, or similar piece of camouflage kit before. Here are a few basics that will help you to understand the concept.

A blind refers to a small, contained cabin. From inside the blind, you are able to observe the surrounding area through several small open windows. The hunter will generally have the convenience of a bench inside the blind, so that he will be comfortable as he waits to see some wildlife.

The blind can be lightweight construction of two by fours and plywood sheets, or metal sheeting is an alternative option as well. One thing to keep in mind about constructing the blind is that it does have to be carried in to the woods and the lighter the construction, the better.

Most hunting blinds are camouflaged so as not to stand out in the natural surroundings; they should be quite difficult to spot easily. A standard size single hunting blind measures about four feet by four feet; there are also double blinds, made with two adjacent compartments to seat two hunters separately.

One of the advantages of blind hunting is that a hunter is completely protected from adverse weather conditions. That makes it easy to remain dry in the event of a sudden rainstorm. In addition, the fact that the blind will blend into the surroundings means the hunter can be less careful about movements, as the wildlife is less likely to detect motion through the walls of the blind.

So a blind has a dual purpose: it helps the hunter to pursue his sport safely, and it protects him from harsh weather. There are all sorts of DIY building plans available for hunters who want to create their own blinds and tailor them to meet their individual needs. - 31499
