By Rick Natnel

We are going to learn some wonderful things about an instrument called spotting scopes. This device is designed specially for viewing the beautiful things in the outdoor and also the wildlife scenario in the day light. With the help of this instrument we are able to see birds and animals from a long distance and also the beauty of nature without disturbing it.

It can be said that the spotting scopes are the mini size telescopes. Its compact size makes it more user friendly and easy portable. The main difference between the telescope and the spotting scope is that it will give an upright image of the target. The spotting scope will be placed on the ordinary photo tripod or one of many window mounts, to enjoy the beauty of the wildlife and the scenery. The capacity of the spotting scope is somewhat higher than a binocular to see the far away object as the magnification of the object is higher. These are the best support tool for the hunters in order to target the animals or birds from the range of the rifle.

Let me give you some basic details about the spotting scope which might help you when you plan to get one. The device is labeled with three important number which helps in distinguish it from others. And all these are related with the device and the quality of the picture you will get through the spotting scope device. The first two numbers will give the information about the level of magnification that the device have and the last number specifies the diameter of the front lens. For example, if you have a label like 18-36x50 then the first two numbers 18-36 indicates the magnification and the 50 indicates that it has a front lens size of 50mm diameter. In order to have a more quality in the image of the target the diameter of the lens should be more.

Optics is the technology used in these instruments. Almost all the spotting scope devices are called refractors which makes use of prism to help the image right side up and also align it from left to right. The prism used in the scope is of two types which are porro prism and roof prism. The widely used one is the porro prism as it can be easily created and also cheaper. But in the case of the roof prism, it is produced in a compressed way to become a slim design, thus making it more portable.

You could find in the market both the high quality and low quality spotting scope which has a wide difference in their quality and performance. So it is up to you to decide on what kind of spotting scope to purchase as you can literally feel the difference between them once you have it. - 31499
