What Makes a Bowie Knife?

By Dylan Sabot

When James Black made his first Bowie knife for the legendary frontiersman in the early 1800s, he likely had no idea that he was creating a legend. This knife is renowned for its utility, its durability and, when self-defense is the issue, its lethality. This knife was designed to be an all-purpose tool and a deadly weapon. Since it was first designed, it has famously served both roles. This knife design went into battle with US troops from the Civil War on. It also was used widely by those heading into the unknown frontier of the nation.

A Bowie knife always has a single edge. Sometimes, the false edge at the end of the blade is sharpened, but this is not traditional. This single edge makes the knife more practical for myriad activities, including skinning, cleaning game and chopping. The powerful blade is what makes chopping possible and is another defining characteristic. In a pinch, these blades could serve as tools that could be used for many different survival needs.

Unlike most hunting knives, a Bowie knife has a wide and angled hand guard. This is also principally designed for its utility when fighting. The hand guard can deflect other weapons away from the user's hands-hands and arms are major targets in knife fights-and also prevents the user's hand from sliding up the blade if it meets heavy resistance from a thrust. As much as a Bowie is a tool of the frontier, it is also a weapon of war and its namesake owner was legendary for his skill with this particular weapon.

The end of a Bowie knife has a blade where the tip falls below the spine. This is a rare feature, sometimes seen on cutlasses and swords. It is principally designed to provide penetration when the knife is used for fighting. It also has the effect of making the knife lighter and more agile, which is as useful at camp as it is in a fight. When cleaning animals, the lighter portion of the blade at the end provides excellent control characteristics.

Bowie knives are useful tools but, in many jurisdictions, they are illegal to carry. These knives, after all, are weapons and are designed to be lethal. Before heading out of the house with one's Bowie strapped to one's leg, check local laws to make sure carrying such a fearsome knife is legal. - 31499

Does Carrying Bowie Knives Require a Permit?

By Dylan Sabot

Bowie knives are impressive tools, useful in myriad different situations. They're used for hunting, for camping, for fishing and for defensive needs, as well. However, because of the bowie's size, you might wonder if you need a permit to own one of these knives. Do you need one to keep such a knife in your home? What about in your vehicle? Can you carry bowie knives in public, unconcealed, without such a permit? Do you need a permit to carry these knives concealed on your person? All of these are important questions and should be answered before you make any purchase decision.

In Your Home - Do you need a permit to own bowie knives and keep them in your home? The short answer to this is "no". You are legally allowed to possess these knives within your home and you can keep them wherever you see fit. You can display them, put one beside your bed, or hide them away for future needs. However, when carrying such a weapon outside your home, things become stickier.

In most states, you do not need a license to carry a knife, unless you plan to carry it concealed on your body. For instance, the state of Arizona allows you to conceal your bowie knife on your person in public, so long as you have a permit to carry a concealed weapon. That said, some states take a very dim view of bowie knives and other large knives. Take Washington DC for example: you cannot carry any knife over 3 inches long, whether concealed or in the open. Therefore, you need to check with your state's laws before you take your knife out in public.

The question of taking your bowie knife on a hunting, camping or fishing trip is quite different from "carrying it in public". As these knives are designed for outdoors use, most states do not prohibit you from using them or carrying them without a permit if you will be engaged in an activity for which the knife was designed (a legal activity, of course).

By informing yourself ahead of time regarding your rights involving bowie knives, you can stay on the good side of the law and enjoy the use of these tools. You should also ensure that you follow any laws governing the carrying of bowie knives in your vehicle, as well. - 31499

The Truth Behind Loud Motorcycle Pipes !!!

By L.J. James

I have been reading and hearing allot lately about people who are saying that loud Motorcycle Pipes are a major problem in the world. These groups are trying to get those in Government to pass all sorts of new inspection laws for Motorcycle Pipes.

Seeing as Motorcycles make up such a small percentage of the Traffic on the road I would say this problem is very minimal at best. ( I wonder how many cars with bad mufflers are heard that many think are Motorcycles)

These people complain saying Motorcycle Riders like loud pipes because they are juvenile and want to show off and say Hey look at me and draw attention to themselves.

The reason many Bikers like loud pipes is not to say look at me, its to say look out for Me! Many Car drivers these days are talking on the phone, texting , putting on make up , eating , playing loud music , watching Dvds and just not paying attention to the road in front of them. If your in a car an you get hit ,You may get a dent in your car, We could Die! (Nothing enjoyable in life is completely safe)

These groups against loud pipes know gathering citizens together to complain is very easy , if they ask people while they are sitting around all summer long bored "Have you ever heard a Loud Motorcycle Go By?" they are going to say yes they Have!" These groups are then going to talk about how annoying these Motorcycles are and convince these bored people how much better their lives would be if these Motorcycles where gone! These bored people are going to jump right on board!

But now ask these same people when was the last time you heard a loud Motorcycle go by? They will probably hard pressed to find an answer! Was it Weeks ago? Months ago? was it Two years ago?

There are already laws on the books in every state that say a Motorcycles pipes can only be so loud! We do not need new laws on the books that most officers will do nothing about while others will abuse !

This Country spends too much time whining about things! Lets stop and think about Motorcycles. Motorcycles prevent traffic, They prevent wear and tear on the roads, They are great for saving Fuel. They are also a great relaxer, Those who Ride Motorcycles are a lot less stressed!

If people stopped complaining about Motorcycles and went and rode a Motorcycle they might not be so bored with their lives and they would have something better to do with their time!!!

Those who Ride enjoy Life a lot More, This is like therapy and religion all rolled up into one for us! Please do not bring the stress and problems of your dull boring lives into our world !

If you are that board and are looking for something to do with your life email me and I will help you find something better to do with your time. Maybe we can find something you can do that could actually help make the world a better place!!!

What Lengths Do Bowie Knife Blades Come In?

By Dylan Sabot

When it comes time to purchase a new bowie knife, you most likely have a specific size range in mind. However, you will find that these knives come in a surprising number of different sizes, from the smallest four-inch bowie knife to enormous machetes that feature the same blade design, but span more than two full feet. Which size is right for your needs? What makes one blade size better than another? Actually, you will find that each size blade is ideal for some rather specific things.

You will find that bowie knives come in blade sizes ranging from a compact six inches all the way up to a full two feet. This tremendous range of sizes is testament to the wide range of uses this blade design can be put to without damaging the knife. However, what size is right for you? In order to answer this question successfully, you will need to know more about your intended uses. While bowie knives are well known for their versatile nature, different blade lengths are more suited to different tasks. How do you determine what's right?

While the smaller blades mentioned above are certainly convenient, you will find that medium length blades are the most common. These run between six inches in length all the way up to about twelve inches in length. Such a blade is the perfect bowie knife for things like skinning prey or helping around the campsite. These blades are more than versatile, which is the reason that they are so enormously popular with such a wide range of knife owners. You will also find the widest range of handle materials, handle designs, blade designs and manufacturer's names in this size range, as well.

Midrange blades, those between eight and twelve inches, are good for a variety of different tasks. While they might not offer the same degree of control as their shorter brethren do, these bowie knives make up for it with greater versatility. In fact, you can use these as butcher knives quite easily, or to chop small sticks for the fire. Of course, you will find that these blades are not the limit to bowie knives. Larger blades do exist.

Blades larger than about twelve inches are a bit more unwieldy than smaller blades are. However, they are ideal for heavy chopping and can even be used to clear brush in a pinch. However, because of their immense size, carrying these blades can be a bit difficult though you will find that they are more than eye-catching when worn. - 31499

Picking Out the Best Deer Hunting Rifle for You

By John Eagleheart

One of the most important decisions for you to make in your hunting career is what deer rifle you should purchase. The keys to achieving your deer hunting goals come in the form of the best firearm for you. When you go to pick out a firearm, you want the one with the best style, action, sighting, size, and ballistics for your hunting area and physical capabilities. Whether or not you make the kill is largely reliant on whether or not your deer hunting rifle matches up best with the criteria above.

Where Will You Be Hunting?

There are two main kinds of deer hunting environments, deep woods or dense brush country and open range country. Some locations are a combination of both environments. Each environment commands its own unique shooting style and rifle traits.

Deer Hunting Rifles for Deep Woods or Dense Brush

Deer hunting rifles that work best in the woods are rifles made for medium or short range shooting. Most of the time, you'll only be shooting from a distance of twenty-five to two hundred yards. So, having a deer hunting rifle that's relatively light (nine pounds or less, including the scope) with a short barrel length (twenty two inches or less) is best. It's important to be able to move quickly and easily through densely wooded areas. You may also want to consider rifles that have automatic functions and are easy to reload. It's fairly common, when deer hunting in rough country, that you end up needing to take multiple shots in quick succession in order to make your kill. I would recommend using heavy bullet cartridges, .270 caliber or greater, with at least a 120 grain bullet, in order to penetrate any brush that might be in the way of your intended target. Any cartridges that travel more than 2200 feet per second have a higher chance of being deflected by the brush, and are therefore not well suited to densely wooded terrain. If your hunting terrain only allows shots to be taken within 50 yards or less of the intended target, you may want to consider using an open sight. If not, I would recommend a scope with four power, or a variable scope that can get down to 3X. You may want to conduct a few experiments at your local rifle range to figure out whether or not open site shooting suits your hunting style.

Deer Hunting Rifles for the Open Range

Deer hunting rifles which are good performers in open areas are those designed for longer range shooting, up to three hundred yards or farther. Rifle portability is not as important as accuracy and velocity in long shot situations and the rifles will be heavier and with longer barrel lengths than deep woods rifles. In open range shooting, high velocity rifle calibers and cartridges are needed. Calibers in the 6MM (.243) range or higher will be satisfactory and bullets from 100 grain up will perform well. Generally, the larger the caliber is, the heavier the bullet will need to be for the best ballistic accuracy. Scopes with a 6 X 9 variable power are what most shooters will need at the very least.

Personal Preferences

When you start looking for the best deer hunting rifle for you, you want to make sure that you keep the above considerations in mind. Make sure that you are comfortable with the way that you're shooting, and how you shoot when using a high caliber or magnum caliber rifle. Do you really want to lug ten or twelve pounds of long rifle with you around your deer hunting terrain?

Visit a nearby hunting rifle dealer and test out various models, kinds, and sizes from different makers of deer hunting rifles to see what feels good. Whenever you have the chance, ask successful hunters what they use and why. Ask friends to permit you to hold and handle their rifles and find out what you like and dislike about it. - 31499

Airsoft: Shooting Range Rifles Assassin In The Field

By Randolph Metzelson

Shooting range rifles are made for a very specific area for firing. The area or firing zone is heavily guarded with masters. These guys are the only person allowed to guard the facility for crazy shooters and by-standers who want to mess with the shooters. Airsoft. World's leader in combat sports has been more influential than firing real guns.

This possibly can be done outdoor. This place for shooting is design to serve heavy bullets that may penetrate the walls. These walls were design to counter the bullet's penetrating power. Some of them are made of some specialized walls.

One thing I hate about paintball game is its high risk when being hit by the paint. Common results may drop down from itches up to serious skin allergies. People who play Airsoft and shooting range rifle toys are not experiencing the same effect of itchiness on the skin. What's made it more popular is that, the game can be played by kids and adults. For adults like me who play Airsoft is like a childhoods dream to become an arm forces soldier. The other thing that makes the game a hit is because of its applicability for military training.

Its counter part suffers from messy clothes, which is tiring to wash after the game. The Airsoft pellets can fire up to a 50 meter long, the paint balls cannot. The toys and guns used in the game are also different with paintball, making it more available since it is cheap.

Guns and rifles used in the game is something that a paintball game has not. What I like most in this game is that, you could act as like a real player in the game, and fortunately it helps you react in more accidents and emergency. It will develop your agility towards short range crimes. Militia's look like are common in the game. This is really for something who has been dreaming of their childhood's fantasies. I had a couple of machine guns that had been developed for this game. Customization is sometimes important, though not really, but for aesthetic purposes, they are useful.

Some of the guns are made in metallic shades. Not just that, plastic framing and metal had been a common material in most of the guns. Mostly, many wanted to have thus high caliber barrels, but with respect to its weight, id rather uses Ingram's guns unlike m16 rifles. What's more, a combination of a short range gun, 45 caliber semi automatic guns and a high caliber Ingram, could help you move faster, then a combination of a 45 and an m-16 rifles? However, still, you could also have more than 2 guns as much as it is approved by the judges.

Some teams are hiring shooting range rifle experts to be a part of the group and be there snipers. What I also hate is, they are just setting back and not really enjoying the game. In a tactical analysis, snipers are the only hope of most teams, but likely as I said, a boring role to play with. The tactics that had been improving by the snipers are important in the defense and offense of a team.

One thing that is common in the market today is the CO2 gas pistol. Though it is not cheap, others still prepare to use conventional ones. It is also a good investment to take part with. Some collect guns and sold at higher prices. - 31499

The Perfect Scope for Your Deer Hunting Rifle Part 2

By John Eagleheart

This is part two of our three part series on choosing the best scope for your deer hunting rifle. In part one we looked at the magnification range and objective lens size of your scope. This article will examine the light transmission, lenses & coatings, and field of view choices you have.

Understanding Light Transmission Qualities In Your Scope

As the magnification increases, the light getting to your eyepiece decreases. As the objective lens increases, the light getting through your eyepiece will also increase. By nature, scopes lose some light as it travels through the scope to your eyes. Even the highest quality and most expensive scopes only achieve a light transmission rate of around 98%. While anything over 95% for light transmission is considered great, there are very nice, quality scopes that are around 90%.

Taking Note of the Lenses and Coatings of the Scope.

Most of the quality scopes you can find today are fog proof, waterproof, and have lenses that are coated. The coatings on the lenses can be quite expensive. Plus, lenses vary in the type, number, and quality of the coatings. You need to realize that there are times that a scope with single coated lenses will easily perform better than a scope with multicoated lenses. How well they function depends on what quality the glass and coatings are. Remember, good quality coatings and glass do not come with a small price tag. Coatings are designed to decrease the amount of glare and loss of light as a result of reflection. Normally a coating will allow for better light transmission and sharper contrast in what you are looking at.

Understanding The Field Of View Of Your Scope

How much you see out of your scope in terms of its entire area, 100 yards in front of you, is called field of view. This figure goes down when you increase the lens magnification of the scope. The reverse is true as well, with better field of vision and lower magnification. If you have a 3x9 variable scope, the 3 power will give you a 30 foot field of view, but only a 14 feet FOV at the 9 power setting, which is dramatically different. You won't get better field of view with a bigger objective lens.

Long Bows Verses The Crossbows

By Terry Pierce

It was in the medieval times that the long bow would often come up against in battle the crossbow. The primary advantage held by the long bows was the long bow's high rate of shot. An archer trained with his long bow easily could release up to twelve arrows per minute. Contrast this to the crossbow which did not need the same degree of skill or strength to use but did not fire as many arrows per minute as the long bow. I think if I had my choice as an archer back in the middle ages I would have chosen the long bow.

You can see the time it takes to launch ten arrows with a long bow verses a crossbow when two modern day archers compete. For the crossbow there was the hand span type. The archer would lean his bow on the ground and draw back the string to lock it into a firing position.

There was the Blevins hook which was a metal stirrup attached to the front end of the crossbow. The archer would place one foot into the hook and draw up the bow to lock into a firing position.

The crane whist which was a two handed crank that allowed the archer to turn and pull back the bow into a firing position. And the goats foot which was a lever that pulled back the bow into a firing position. Then the arrow was placed in the firing position.

In a recent long bow verses crossbow demonstration two modern day archers used a fourteenth century styled hand span crossbow and a fourteenth century styled English long bow. The crossbow of this time was one of the quickest to load and fire. The men begin their challenge. The archer using the long bow reaches quickly for his first arrow stuck in the ground in front of him. He loads the first arrow. He pulls back, aims and releases his first arrow and quickly reaches for the next arrow. The crossbow archer needs to set his bow on the ground and then place his foot into the stirrup and bend over grab the sting and pull back to lock in firing position.

He then aims and pulls the trigger to fire the arrow. The long bow archer has already fired three arrows. In the time it takes the archer using a crossbow to fire six arrows the archer firing a longbow has fired ten arrows in fifty one seconds. That was really very quick for the crossbow archer.

The test showed that the crossbow although not as fast to use than the long bow was still reasonably fast to shoot. But keep in mind the crossbow that was used for this contest was a hand span crossbow which is a very fast crossbow to shoot. And it had a light pressure pull weight. It was only 130 pounds. The long bow used had a draw weight of 110 pounds.

For the crossbow power to equal the long bow here it would need to have 3 times the draw weight. And that means a draw weight of more than three hundred pounds and you would need to have a turn or crank style crossbow because a man could not draw that weight without the help of a mechanical system. And a crank style is much slower to load. - 31499

Get The Best Telescopic Deer Hunting Rifle Scope Available Part 1

By John Eagleheart

When deer hunting season opens, avid deer hunters will want their rifle to be outfitted with the ideal telescopic sight, one that suits not only his rifle, but also the area he is hunting in, as well as his own personal hunting and shooting technique.

If you want to shoot from long range, you should invest as much money as you can in your scope, so you can ensure accuracy. If you want a scope that will allow you to observe, as well as shoot accurately from all ranges, get adjustable magnification scopes. When you look for adjustable rifle scope, you can see the lens diameter, as well as the minimum and maximum magnifications. If your scope is 3x9x42, it'll magnify at a minimum of 3x and a maximum of 9x, and the lens diameter will be around 40 millimeters in size.

Understanding The Magnification Range Of A Rifle Scope

For deer hunting, it is typical to find a a scope with a 3x9 magnification range. However, if you are hunting in thick woods and your shots will typically be 50 yards or less, you will usually do fine with a 4X scope. When hunting in areas where longer shots are required, where you will be making shots that average several hundred yards, you will do better with a 4x12 or a 4.5x14. If you are hunting on the plains or in open country, you will want your scope to be at a higher power. Normally, in this environment, you will be able to see in all directions and have little chance of being surprised by an animal. You may even have to make a shot from one hilltop to the next, or one mountain to the next.

Next We Will Look at The Objective Lens Size

The typical deer hunting rifle scope has an objective lens size of 40-44 mm. However, you can find some advertised objective lenses as big as 50, 56, or possibly 75mm. It is important to realize that objective lenses of these sizes are usually not to your advantage. When they are set at their highest power, these larger objective lenses will simply provide more usable light than the smaller objective lenses. Unfortunately, they can be quite uncomfortable and are hard to align with the eye.

If your scope is mounted appropriately, all it takes is a simple shouldering of the gun and opening your eyes and you'll be able to naturally see through the scope, with no need to crook your head to any uncomfortable angle just to see through the scope appropriately. With large objective lenses you have to mount the rifle scope higher to keep the lens from touching the gun barrel, you won't be able to have a comfortable scope. If you have to mount your scope higher, your rifle will be unbalanced, uncomfortable to handle, and less accurate.

Pick the correct scope for your hunting environment and shooting style and you will be bringing more venison home. It is important to know your hunting style as the proper scope can enhance and improve it, while the wrong one can destroy it. You can finish our comprehensive discussion regarding choosing the best telescopic sight on our website. - 31499

How To Take Care Of Your Tippmann 98 Custom

By Benedict Perez

Tippmann 98 Custom is an update of the original Tippmann 98. It is a semi-automatic blowback paintball gun with a robust open-bolt inline. It is still equipped with a reliable and durable unit, making it popular especially to newcomers of the game. It is also known as 98C, 98 Custom or 98.

Like any other paintball guns, a regular maintenance is needed to ensure its good performance and to make it last long. Along with the gun is the maintenance pack. It includes a spare tank, O-ring, barrel sleeve and a cleaning cable.

For the ball propulsion, most people would use carbon dioxide as it is cheaper compared with the compressed air. Compressed air is more expensive because of the upfront cost of the compressed bottles. When using CO2, use the 20 oz tank to provide you more shots.

Because of the cheaper price, carbon dioxide is commonly used for the propulsion of the balls. If you prefer using CO2 you can use a 20 oz CO2 tank to provide you more shots.

Keep in mind to use a quality paintballs. Avoid using paintballs with thinner shells. It breaks easily, making your gun prone to jams.

Regular cleaning of your gun after the game is also very essential. Although it can endure a significant amount of dirt and paint, a clean gun can obviously function better as compared with a dirty one. After playing, remove all the paintballs and release the air from your gun. Remove the barrel and clean it using a pull-through towel or sponge. Remove also the feed neck and clean it using a warm, running water and then dry it with a towel. If there are broken paintballs, remove it using a spray bottle. You can also use this spray bottle to remove dirt and paint in the breech area. The entire outside of the gun can also be clean with water and wiped dry.

While cleaning, you may also want to check if the ball latch is intact. Sometimes, the 98 Custom must be disassembled. In doing so, you have ensure that the front sight spring is still there, as well as the other springs and pins in the trigger when you putting it back. Exposing the internal part of the gun enables you to clean them as well. The rear bolt can be wiped clean with a wet cloth then oiled. The o-ring on the other hand can be replaced as necessary, as well as the ball latch. Keep in mind that when disassembling the 98C, you have to be sure the valve is left in its place. Repeated removing of the bolts that holds it can cause its body to wear and tear.

Once you are done cleaning, lubricate it and it is now ready to be used again. Remember, do not use any other oil. There is a special paintball gun oil that you should use for lubricating your gun. Some lubricants may not be compatible with CO2 and using them may cause the marker to malfunction. - 31499

What are the Various Parts of Bowie Knives?

By Dylan Sabot

If you have just purchased your first bowie knife, or even if you have been an avid collector of these blades for a number of years, it can be difficult to determine exactly what all the different parts of the blade are supposed to be used for. Part of this confusion stems from the myriad different styles of blade out there. For instance, you'll find modern bowies that have saw-tooth edging on the spine, while historically accurate models do not include this feature. What are the different parts supposed to do?

For instance, some knives include a saw-tooth edge along the spine of the knife. This is a modern development and hails from the Vietnam era military knives issued to helicopter pilots and foot soldiers alike. The saw teeth can help cut through wood, plastic and other materials, as well as being used for scaling fish or sawing through bone. However, novice users should beware these bowie knife models, as the saw can often get in the way of general use. Injury to the knife owner is not uncommon.

Another element of bowie knife design is the clipped point. In fact, if a knife claims to be a bowie, but does not have this distinctive feature, it is not a bowie knife. The clipped point was one of the original innovations that helped to cement this knife's reputation in the Western world. It allows immense control of the point during general use or during combat, and provides greater penetration when using the knife for stabbing. A sharpened false edge on the clipped point offers extra cutting power, as well.

Spanish Notch - Some bowie knife models include a Spanish Notch, while others do not. The true use of this feature seems to have been lost to the mists of time, but today, it serves as a guide to show where sharpening should begin. Some people attest that the notch was placed there to help catch an opponent's blade, but most collectors and historians are skeptical of these claims.

Guard - The guard, or quillions, of the blade serve several purposes, as well. You'll find that traditional blades have angled guards, with the upper guard angled forward toward the point and the lower guard angled back, toward the butt. These provide protection for the hand, as well as allowing the wielder to trap an opponent's blade (the upper guard only). The guard also serves to keep your hand from running off the handle and onto the blade when stabbing with the knife. - 31499

Understanding Hunting Crossbows And How They Work

By Terry Pierce

These hunting tools have many different parts and it will help if you know what to watch for. Crossbows are very useful hunting tools and you really should see what they have to offer you. But you must consider the laws for these materials that are used in many different places.

The end result is an arrow being fired from the mechanism by a trigger releasing the string. This is possible because of the rigid material that makes up this archery tool. The material is very sturdy allowing the bow to be mounted onto this mechanism that supports the string that is cocked backwards.

Because of its strong build it can be easy to use various materials with crossbows. Many of these tools have aiming sights attached onto them. These work to help with getting a good target ready before firing. A magnifying sight can work for getting easier aim for longer distances too.

Arrows are used as projectiles for these materials. These can be made with light carbon or composite materials. This can work to get an individual arrow to be about one pound in weight in many cases. The strong build is also valuable in that it will help to keep a good trajectory set up. Individual crossbows will generally have to work with specific types of arrows though.

When checking out these crossbows it helps to note some things including its FPS rate. The FPS, or feet per second, that a tool can fire at is important when using a bow. This is a measurement of how fast an arrow can go after being fired. Many bows can work at firing rates of three hundred FPS. You will need to use the proper arrows for any bow to reach its top FPS rate.

150 pound draw weights on crossbows are not uncommon today. Draw weight is the rated poundage of the crossbow that propels the string forward when fired. The right draw weight and the right arrow combination will produce your maximum feet per second.

Crossbows variations are many. It's not common to find a late version bow that weighs more than 10 lbs. The length and width of bows can be very different too. You will find bows today that are over 3 feet in length.

No matter what you are interested in you should watch for the legality of what you have. Many states and provinces have laws relating to what you can legally hunt for with bows. Some areas even limit this option to those who have physical disabilities. Draw weight limits can be used in some places too. For instance, in Ohio bows with draw weights of over two hundred pounds are illegal.

Crossbows are useful tools for hunting. They can work with useful mechanisms and arrows. They do work with different parts though. Be sure to also watch for the legality of these materials where you are. - 31499

Instructions For Whitetail Deer Hunting

By Ken Ayers

For those new to hunting and looking to get into some Whitetail Deer hunting, the following will offer some basic hints and tips and how to get started with gear and locating hunting grounds, as well as strategies for your hunt.

You will need to first think about what sort of hunt you would like to be on. If you want to do some bow hunting then this will involve getting up close and personal with nature and a little more stealth and cunning. If you are looking for a bit more fun with your friends then you should consider using a rifle and a more direct approach. For those who are keen for a more direct approach but want more of a challenge, then you could do some muzzle-loading.

After deciding on what sort of Whitetail Deer hunter you wish to be, you will need to get hold of the gear appropriate to your style. If you have decided to do bow hunting then you will need to dress appropriately with a form of camouflage depending on the terrain and season. You may also need to learn how to use certain hunting tools to help, such as calls and scents.

Muzzle-loading and rifle hunts are similar in that these hunting methods don't require as much stealth as hunting with a bow. They also require the same sort of attire which can be anything from mid-weather to cold-weather.

Once you have the appropriate clothing and necessary tools, you need to find a suitable hunting ground which can potentially be an issue. The best bet is to simply find some public grounds that will allow you to hunt. If you are lucky enough to have suitable land yourself then you certainly need to take advantage of that, or else look to see if a friend does have the right sort of location.

After locating the grounds, you simply need to go and and get hunting. In order to become a decent hunter and to improve your skills, knowledge and experience, you need to get active.

Once you have got yourself out there, then there are a number of different whitetail deer hunting strategies that you could employ. These strategies, of course, depend heavily on what sort of hunt you are on. You could be sat in a tree stand using scents and calls, or you might be using certain member of a group to flush out a deer for another party. Either way, it is good to try a little of everything to see which sits best with you. - 31499

One of the most important questions when considering the purchase of a bowie knife is what it can cut. What can you use that new bowie knife to cut? What are the limitations? Will it cut equally well through skin as through cooked meat or raw vegetables? What about wood and underbrush? What uses can you put that new bowie knife to?

Let's take a look at the question of size. Bowie knives are available in a bewildering range of sizes, from six inches to more than a foot long. Obviously, you won't want to take a six or seven inch knife out for the task of chopping firewood. That's better left to a hatchet or an axe. However, if you have one of the longer bowie knives, they can be quite heavy enough to use as a hatchet (if needs be). You'll find that larger blades are excellent for any task requiring chopping and that bone, wood and even light metal can be cut with consummate ease.

Now, what do these factors have to do with your knife? Why can't a single bowie knife be used to cut through brush and then used to gut and clean that freshly caught fish? Why can't you slice a tomato into paper-thin pieces and then use that same knife to cut up kindling for the night's fire? Well, actually, you can. However, why would you want to? You will find that some bowie knife types are better suited to specific cutting tasks than are others. As an example, a larger bowie knife might be heavy enough and resilient enough to be used as a hatchet, allowing you to clear brush and even chop up small to moderate trees for the night's fire.

You'll find that knives made out of high carbon steel offer a better edge, which is ideal for areas where you need a very precise cut - say when skinning an animal, or butterflying chicken breasts. However, if you were to take that same knife and use it for hacking wood for the fire, you'll find that, while it works, your edge is dulled very rapidly. Therefore, the longer the blade is, the more ideal it is for cutting things like wood, bone or heavy muscle. Thinner, shorter blades are better suited to cutting things like skin, fat or for use in areas where precision is required.

Before purchasing any bowie knives, you should make sure that you are buying a design that will fit your intended purposes. Otherwise, you might find that you are doing little more than throwing your money down the drain and that your knife does not stand the test of time. - 31499

What Size of Bowie Knife Is Best for Me?

By Dylan Sabot

When it comes time to choose a new option from several bowie knives, you will need to know how to choose the right size. It's no secret that bowie knives are available in an incredible range of sizes. In fact, it can seem like the larger the blade is, the more popular that particular model will be. However, size is not everything. How do you know what you should look for in bowie knives? What makes one knife better for you than another one?

The key here is size - the size of the blade (length, width and thickness) will determine just how useful bowie knives are to you. In order to determine what size is appropriate for you, you'll need to take a look at your intended usage. For instance, do you plan to chop with the knife? This might be anything from vegetables to brush, but if you will use your blade for chopping, a longer, thicker blade is better.

Shorter blades, on the other hand, are a different matter all together. You wouldn't want to use a six-inch blade for hacking through underbrush. You would, however, want such a smaller blade if you were doing something that required precise control, such as cleaning a freshly caught fish or skinning that stag that you just brought down. Larger blades can damage whatever you're cleaning or skinning, simply because you cannot control them as well. Shorter blades offer better precision and better control, at the cost of brute power, though.

Of course, there is the converse of this. If you intend to use your bowie knife for chopping or hacking, then a longer blade is a good thing. The extra length of the blade will help keep your hands clear of whatever it might be that you're chopping.

Very large bowie knives can be quite uncomfortable to carry and unwieldy, to boot. These are best left in your vehicle or in your pack, unless you are actively using them. Shorter blades, though, are ideal for wearing and will not hinder your movements unduly. They are also less attention grabbing than their larger brethren. - 31499

Is Pepper Spray Legal If Bought Online?

By James Edwards

Capsicum peppers, of which chilies are one example, are used in the making of pepper spray. The spray is often sold as a defense against bear and dog attack, however, it is probably more purchased to protect against attack by humans. Naturally, a prospective buyer wants to know, is pepper spray legal?

The effects of pepper spray can be very strong. When sprayed into the eyes, it irritates, causes pain and tearing, and may even cause temporary blindness. It can also cause coughing and difficulty breathing. Effects can be felt strongly for 30 to 45 minutes, but the person may continue feeling effects for a few hours. Where the skin is exposed to pepper spray, a burning sensation is felt.

The spray is usually sold in small canisters that will easily fit in a pocket or purse. Some devices are made to conceal spray in a convenient place such as in a ring.

Law enforcement also often uses pepper spray, frequently for use in controlling riots. There are some conflicting reports as to whether or not in can result in serious health problems when used in this manner. Some cases have been recorded in which death has occurred following exposure to pepper spray by the police.

The legality of purchasing and carrying pepper spray is dependent on where you reside, as it is different from one country to the next. It is generally legal to purchase pepper spray in the States, but where you can purchase it may vary. For example, there are states that only allow you to buy the spray from a licensed firearms dealer. In New York, you must purchase either from a licensed pharmacist or from a licensed dealer in firearms.

States may also restrict the concentration of the pepper and some also restrict the size of the container that you can carry on your person. There are many companies that sell pepper spray online, so you should be sure to check the regulations where you live to ensure that pepper spray is legal when purchased this way. - 31499

What Material Are Bowie Knife Handles?

By Dylan Sabot

When it comes time to choose that new bowie knife, you'll have quite a few things to consider. One of the most important is what type of handle material you want. While blade length and the actual style of the blade are certainly vital questions to answer, choosing the right handle is imperative. The right handle choice will give you a bowie knife that offers a great grip, the look and feel that you want, and will also play a role in the durability and longevity of your knife. What materials can you choose from?

Wood - Wood is the traditional choice for bowie knife handles. You might find that the knife you like offers a solid wood handle, though most feature two wood "scales" or halves joined with rivets and other hardware. The hardware might be made of brass, silver or steel, depending on the model that you choose. Some popular woods used for bowie knife handles include walnut, cocobolo, oak and much more.Wood can be shaped easily, so that it has any type of style desired, or it can be made to resemble other materials.

You will find that bowie knives can also feature handles made out of metal. Steel is the usual choice here. You will also find that these handles are usually joined to bowie knives that feature more modernistic designs, such as those with saw-tooth edges on the spine of the blade. Of course, one of the best things about metal handles is that you do not have to worry about the handle wearing out over time, though corrosion can be a problem in some rare cases.

Other options for handle material include plastics, composites, bone and even linen (hardened with a special manufacturing process). Each of these offers unique benefits, whether that be cost reduction, lighter weight or even longer lasting durability. Bone, in particular, is ideal for any bowie knife that you might want to display, as well as for those knives that will actually see use in the real world. However, before you can choose any of these materials, you should know what you want in a handle, as well as what to look for under the handle.

Other materials featured in the handles of bowie knives include leather, composite materials and even cloth (though specially treated and hardened). Your choice of handle material will determine how long the handle bears up, as well as how easy the knife is to grip and even quite a bit of how attractive that knife actually is. - 31499

CCW Training Info You Should Know

By Amber Shipplen

I was recently speaking with a friend of mine about her experience with a local CCW class. She took it at the gun and licensing shop down the road. I was surprised to hear her say that the experience was so bad and that the instructor was only interested in was providing only the very basic information one needed to get a permit.

She went on to say that she didn't even feel like she deserved the permit because there was so much more that she should know about concealed firearms. She was also felt like there should have been more emphasis on state laws in Ohio CCW classes.

This wasn't the first time I had heard complaints like this. But it did surprise me that she was complaining about this specific company instead of some back-alley, questionable store. After all, this was a store I regularly visited to purchase ammunition and used their gun range. I had assumed they would offer quality classes.

That being said, the line between a great Ohio CCW class and a bad one can be foggy and difficult to pinpoint. There are however, some things to look at.

Does the instructor seem knowledgeable? The difference between a good instructor and a bad instructor can often be the depth and breadth of experience they have obtained. The more experience they've had handling firearms, and the longer they've been teaching, the more likely you are to learn and enjoy the process.

Have other people said good things about the class and the instructor? Talk to the people around you. See if anyone has enjoyed the class in the past and felt that it was worthwhile. A recommendation from your friends should go a long go a long way toward helping you find the right classes.

Does the program or shop keep all its licenses updated? Take a look at the program's history and make sure they always comply with all the state regulations for Ohio CCW classes. Make sure they fully understand all the local laws and regulations.

Finally, always evaluate how the CCW classes are providing value for your money. If things aren't going the way you expect, you can either quit the class or demand a refund. You should never waste time in a class that won't help you in the long run. - 31499

CQB In Airsoft

By Dan J. Temple

Airsoft is a game where players dress in military uniforms and arm themselves with replica guns with compressed air motors firing plastic pellets.

CQB stands for close quarter battle, and refers to short range encounters between combatants. Players tend to use shorter barrelled guns to accommodate due to the short ranges involved, shotguns, pistols and submachine guns. Unsurprisingly then, CQB tends to take place indoors and games are fast paced, strategic and full of action.

One of the major factors that will determine a win or loss in CQB games is the use of tactics and planning. Indoor locations have a finite number of access and choke points and commanders must recognise those areas and implement strategies to exploit them. Teams will quickly lose sight of each other as they move around buildings, so it's vital that every team understands their objective before the mission begins.

When moving in close quarters it's critical you remain stealthy and as small a target as possible. Don't run unless you absolutely have to - running creates more noise than walking and faster moving targets are easier to spot. When walking, bend your knees and hunch over your gun - this will keep your profile as small as possible and harder to hit.

Always be ready for the enemy. When moving through a cleared area, keep you gun shouldered, pointing slightly down and ready to draw. When moving through a live area, keep your gun up and in front of you at all times. When you look, look with your gun. Turning your head and gun is faster than turning your head and swinging your gun into position.

In CQB games cover is seldom used for long periods as players will rapidly move from cover to cover as they assault a target. If you are using cover, make sure it's sufficient to protect you. Doors and windows make good cover as they hide your whole body and allow quick movement around and through. When using doors or windows as cover, stand close to them and just out of sight. When you move out of cover, do so in a way that minimises the target for the enemy. Lean out with your hips and don't hesitate.

Assign fire sectors to your team so all the angles are covered. For example, the front man should cover the front, the second man covers the flanks of the first, the third covers the left and right and so on. When you have your fire sector, stick to it. If you are not covering attacks of opportunity, do not fire at enemies in that sector - you may find you hit your own team first.

Airsoft guns can take longer to reload than real weapons as players don't dispose of magazines and may require a bottle to refill magazines. When reloading, signal to your team that you require a reload, move to cover and get started. Have your sidearm to hand at all times and when you're done, signal to your team and move back as fast as possible.

All these tips are easy to read but much harder to execute. Practice drilling these with your team so you can execute them quickly and without thought. - 31499

The Ion Paintball Gun For Exciting Paintball Games

By Benedict Perez

An ion paintball gun is handy when you want to make warfare games like speedball and woodsball exciting. If you do not have an ion paintball gun, you can subsitute a spyder paintball gun. Whether one is a novice just starting out or an expert who has experienced many memorable paintball "battles," you must accept the fact that warfare sports can be very addictive. The thrilling experiences and never-ending action they provide are likely to keep one coming back time and again. Speedball is considered to be an extreme sport, although its classification as such is controversial.

A typical game involves at least two opposing teams shooting at each other with balls of paint serving as 'bullets'. The paint balls are shot using the paintball gun. Though rules can sometimes be modified to suit the dynamics of the groups involved, the general rules of the game state that one is eliminated when they are struck by a paintball. The fact that the paint balls bursts on impact acts as evidence that the hit has indeed taken place. The main aim is for each team to eliminate as many members of the opposing team(s) and thereby emerge victorious. Woodsball is also similar to speedball but in this case, the game is normally played in a natural setting and hence the name.

Several rules must be followed to make sure that you and your teammates and opponents are safe while playing speedball. Protective gear is of paramount importance. You must always wear a mask to protect yourself. Although in theory paintballs are fairly harmless, not wearing protective clothing can leave you open to injury if a paintball hits your eyes or some other sensitive part of your body. Also, the paint that sprays out when a paintball bursts can work its way into your ears and other sensitive body openings. Make it a rule that you must never shoot at someone who is not wearing protective gear.

Using a spyder paintball or ion paintball gun is a skill that a person perfects over time. Make sure you are comfortable with the basic handling of a gun before you participate in any contest. The ion paintball gun is capable of firing at a rate of up to 17 paintballs per second when in semi-automatic mode and up to 10 paintballs per second when in automatic mode. This superb rate of fire is the gun's main advantage, but in addition to its superior firing capability, its lower price makes it one of the most popular paintball guns on the market. Its light weight makes it easy to carry and this is very important during a lengthy contest.

Ion paintball markers are powered by 9-volt batteries and are preferred because of their relatively long life. In terms of firing, a battery can last for as many as 15,000 shots. The gun's design provides easy access to the bolt and valve area and this is important for ease of cleaning. You should never let paint stay in the valve area, because over time it will cause corrosion. - 31499

Hunting Giant Racked Deer? - Tips You Need to Know

By John Eagleheart

At some time during my deer hunting "career" I grew weary of hunting normal sized bucks and developed an interest in shooting trophy bucks only. There was a considerable learning curve involved in changing my hunting tactics from the good buck to the monster buck, but I searched out all the deer hunting tips I could muster from the most successful deer hunters in the country.

I discovered that the deer hunting tactics when after the average deer do not necessarily follow to the hunt for the more elusive, hugely antlered mature bucks. After a lot of hit and miss, I discovered the true secrets to locating the great deer, and my productivity has grown from year to year.

Does your hunting area have large bucks? You typically never see the largest bucks out there. However, don't just give up on an area simply because other people haven't seen big bucks there, as they may be missing something. Deer with the large racks that you're looking for tend to stay in similar types of areas. Try to go to where you can find the big deer frequently, so that you can snag that large trophy rack you want. It's often frustrating to learn that many areas won't have any big bucks at all, least of all one you can find. You can, however, increase your chances of finding big bucks if they're in the area you're hunting in.

The most efficient method of determining if there are big bucks in an area which you are planning on deer hunting is to make inquiries. If you are searching for an area to go deer hunting, the best candidates for information on the local deep population are other hunters, local farmers and ranchers, county agents, game wardens, feed store proprietors and even patrons of the nearest coffee shop or cafe.

You are attempting to discover if there are any big deer in the area and if so, where they are located. Don't forget that you are seeking out big bucks, not a lot of smaller deer. There are places which are teeming with small bucks, but this is not our goal. We are simply searching only for that monster deer. Should you presently be on a lease or are otherwise committed to one specific area, determine the areas or stands that have produced the biggest bucks over the last several years and find out if any big bucks have been spotted in any particular place. This is a good place to begin. A word of warning, however, and that is that deer stories approach fishing tales in their reliability, so you should get as many verifiable facts as you are able. - 31499

Do You Have What It Takes to Bag a Monster Buck?

By John Eagleheart

Are you deer hunting to take that once-in-a-lifetime deer with the giant rack? If you are aspiring to harvest the kind of buck which most folks only dream of, I can help, but you will probably need to alter your thinking and tactics and assume the diligence and devotion required to bring home a massive trophy buck.

Except for the occasion when you may get very lucky, the productive hunting of a huge whitetail or mule deer is an undertaking that may involve a complete year or more of planning, scouting, and hunting. There have been single bucks which I have scouted, chased, hunted, and fantasized about for years before I eventually saw the chance to make the kill. The huge "war hosses" have a singular characteristic of never being caught in a position where a man could shoot them. There is a reason that the giants are giants, and they appear to have a sixth sense regarding evading hunters.

Fortunately, you can typically predict how the bigger, older bucks will move, and you have to strategize and anticipate how they will move to succeed. Their behavior patterns and movements are so different from doe and smaller bucks, that you can't approach them the same way. They survived this long by being clever and knowing when not to go into a dangerous situation. They've gotten so good at avoiding hunters and not placing themselves in a position that allows them to be hunted that they can live well over 6 years.

A huge buck generally will not flee at the least bit of danger but will instead remain hidden until the coast is clear. I have watched bucks hold firm in cover taking advantage of their natural stealth and incredible camouflage, and then slip, crawl or swim away in avoidance of the most seasoned hunters.

In order to have success with these big boys you will have to deploy different tactics. It is very similar to the police detective finally getting the master criminal after months or years of hard work along with being in the right place at the right time to make the arrest. - 31499

Those Wily Pickerel Trophy Fish

By Transcona U. Jadran

It can always be said that any day spent fishing in the Great White North of Canada is better than the best day at the office. Who could ask for a better day than being on the lake out casting for that trophy sized Walleyed Pickerel? Alternatively you might be fishing from shore for just some plain old less exotic perch fish nothing can be said to be more relaxing and a life of leisure than a fishing expedition with your family or fishing buddies at your side. It is just plain good old fashioned safe fun.

It is not your imagination. Although you may see lots of trophy sized and master angler Walleye and Pickeral fish, most of what you catch will be in the 1 to 3 lb ranges. Two pounds of highly packed weight seem to be the norm for this specie... Yet the average 2 lb weight fish can be said to more than tasty beyond belief. It is no accident that Pickeral fish are among the favorite and preferred prey of many avid out doors folk. Fried up on the spot - yummy. It can be held that in most cases that it is only the larger and master angler trophy sized, which seem to make it back home after the fishing trip and expedition to be off to the taxidermist and taxidermists. Professional taxidermists can attest to this fact.

If there is one type of aquatic and water landscape condition and conditions that Walleye and the Canadian pickerel fish like, it is cold water living and swimming. Generally it is held that these fish prefer water temperature conditions of less than 29 degrees Celsius of water temperature as the general rule of thumb. Hence conditions such as in Northern Minnesota, Wisconsin or the vast cooler lakes of Lake Manitoba especially in the Lake Manitoba Narrows regions or the very large Lake Winnipeg inland sea are more than ideal.

Catch one Walleye, odds and experience says that there are plenty of others from the same schooling group just loitering around waiting for you. It is as if they lurk just to tease and taunt you by offering them the freshest of bait or a new shiny bright colored lure or jig. Experienced anglers will teach you that you can count that in the greatest amount of cases that the Walleye and Pickerels hold near the bottom of the lake. All in all the tactics and strategies employed are not unlike those that you would employ when fishing for Goldeye fish. Hence patterns of attack are not unlike those employed in successfully landing trophy sized Goldeyes. When fishing at these depths watch your line (or lines if local fishing and game laws and regulations allow), for any lateral or unusual movements and strip. In these cases simply remove or retrieve your fishing line by hand. It seems that Walleye fish take their food very slowly, thus the hook must be set the very moment and second that a fish takes the fly or it will simply reject it.

Some people like to travel and lie on the beach for their vacation or vacations. Others like city shopping and dining. Yet nothing beats the excitement and comradeship of a day spent fishing with your buddies fresh from the fishing lodge or lodges, and then frying up your catch of fresh Walleyed Pickerel. - 31499

Using a Bowie Knive as a Throwing Knife

By Dylan Sabot

You might think that due to their heft and size, that bowie knives would make an ideal throwing knife. You might even have chanced to watch some of the many YouTube videos that show people using bowie knives as throwing knives (sometimes with some very mixed results). However, the fact remains that bowie knives are not designed to be thrown. They are handheld tools, designed for cutting, cleaning and any number of other uses.

If you've paid any attention to YouTube, you have probably seen a few videos of those using bowie knives as thrown weapons. You might also have noticed that they hit the target (sometimes). However, there are a few things that you might not have noticed. While getting a bowie knife to hit the target and stick is a neat trick, there are some issues here. First, notice how close the thrower must stand to the target. With a real throwing knife, you can be further back, and therefore in a safer area.

Second, you might notice that only some of the throws are successful. While a couple of individuals might have been able to hit the target with sufficient force for the blade to stick, you will also see a very large number of people bounce the knife off the target. This is because the knife is not weighted for throwing - it's designed to be held in the hand. This means that it is quite well weighted for many different uses, but flying through the air with any degree of accuracy is not one of them.

Yet another reason that you shouldn't use bowie knives as throwing knives is the simple fact that you can achieve better results with knives designed specifically for that purpose. You'll find throwing knives are quite affordable and can be purchased in numerous places, both online and offline. Keep your bowie knife for the uses it was actually designed for and pickup a throwing knife or two for your target practice.

As you can see, using bowie knives as throwing weapons is not the ideal situation. You can damage yourself, your knife or someone else. In addition, you'll simply find that you can gain more enjoyment using a knife designed for throwing, rather than attempting to throw a bowie knife. - 31499

What People Should Know About Handcuffs And Their Use

By Mort Espenoza

In the world of restraints, one of the most popular and useful type of restraint is known as handcuffs. Handcuffs now have a lot of variations and features added into their design. What was previously made only out of chains is now made out of hinges and even sometimes bars, depending on the level of restraint that is needed for the individual.

Handcuffs that were created with chains previously, tend to allow more movement than restraint for the individuals wearing them. Cuffs that are equipped with bars tend to give the least amount of range of motion. Cuffs with hinges can be considered somewhere in between both of these options. Different variations on cuffs can give different ranges of motion, while still restraining the individual.

If the cuffs that are being worn are too tight, this can be harmful for the individual. Loss of circulation is known to happen. In other cases, nerve damage has even been caused. In consideration of this, double lock cuffs were created for the safety of the individual. These cuffs have a lock spring function inside of them that prevent any further tightening from happening while the cuffs are being worn. There are different types of double lock cuffs, though this is mostly just in consideration of how the double lock itself functions.

There are a few various sizes of cuffs available. Some are oversized. Other types may be sized to fit younger individuals, such as juvenile offenders. If oversized cuffs are not available, sometimes police will use two pairs of cuffs together in order to ensure that both hands are cuffed and that the individual is properly restrained.

The price range on cuffs can depend on what the cuffs are made out of and some of the features they have. Sometimes plastic cuffs, which are disposable, are used by the law enforcement. Most often, metal cuffs are used because they provide the most proper restraint. Other types of cuffs are coated in colored paint. These allow prisons to code any prisoners by color for system management within the prison.

Magicians sometimes use cuffs for stunts or illusions. More popularly for escape acts. It is rare that the individual actually escapes from the cuffs by themselves. There is usually the use of a duplicate key and the audience rarely realizes it. However, sometimes individuals are capable of escaping pairs of cuffs by picking the locks on the cuffs as well.

Never cuff yourself or someone you know with actual police grade cuffs. This is not safe. Doing this can result in nerve damage and even injury, because you do not have the proper training to use the cuffs correctly. Try using a fake pair from a novelty store instead. This is much safer and you will not have to worry about hurting yourself or anyone else in the process. Aside from that, they are also much cheaper than what you would experience with actual cuffs. - 31499

How to Care for a Bowie Knife

By Dylan Sabot

Bowie knives are some of the most popular blades on the market. These knives have been around for almost 200 years and during that time, they've gained a well-earned reputation for quality, durability, ruggedness and much more. However, all that ruggedness and durability goes out the window if you do not maintain your blade correctly. What should you do about maintaining that blade? How do you know if you're doing it right or not?

Proper knife care for your bowie knife actually starts with proper use. Remember, your knife is not a screwdriver. It is not a hatchet or a hammer, either. While you can certainly use your knife in these capacities in a pinch, it's really not recommended that you do. Using your knife correctly will ensure that it holds up better and lasts much longer.

You must also ensure that your knife is stored away properly when not in use. Some people believe that storing bowie knives in a leather sheath is sufficient protection. However, leather can absorb humidity from the surrounding air, which is then put in direct contact with the metal of the blade during storage. This will eventually create rust and corrosion, even on a stainless steel blade. A better option is a hard scabbard or sheath. Metal works quite well for this and you'll find models that offer a seal for the upper portion of the sheath to help guard against moisture.

Another area of concern with bowie knife sharpening is proper storage. Carrying your knife in a leather sheath is fine - these are excellent options, particularly for those who don't like the feel of a hard scabbard or sheath. However, leather tends to attract moisture, so storing the blade for a long period of time in a leather sheath might not be the best idea. Choose a well-sealed storage environment to help protect your knife from corrosion by moisture.

Other considerations when caring for bowie knives include oiling the blade when in storage (to protect against moisture), or proper use of the blade. Remember, this is a knife, not a hammer, screwdriver or pry-bar and should not be used as such if you can avoid it. - 31499

Night Vision Goggles For Sale At Retailers

By Georgia Jackson

Who would have ever thought that you could get night vision goggles for sale? Previously night vision goggles were for military or police personnel only because of their high price and the advanced technology used to make them, today you can find them at just about any store that sells sporting goods or outdoor gear. And even department stores carry them as well. Seeking out the perfect pair to invest in can be a little testing, but do not just pick up the first one you see. You will likely regret it later.

A quality pair of night vision goggles are a great tool for hunters to help with night hunting, and for fishermen looking to do some night fishing. If they did not have any night vision goggles, doing any outdoors activities at night would be extremely difficult. Using a flash light or lamp can alert prey where you are and make your entire endeavor a waste of energy. The sense of accomplishment that can come from successfully pulling off anything in the complete darkness is immeasurable.

Are you looking for some night vision goggles for sale for your own use? If so, any sporting goods or outdoor activity shop will be able to provide you with what you are looking for. Sporting goods stores usually have a much better selection than they would at a department store. If you see a pair of night vision goggles that you think will fit your needs, make a note of the brand and the model. Hold off on buying it for now you need to make sure you're making a good purchase before actually diving into it.

Your next course of action should be to check online for consumer reviews. Finding reviews written by other people can give you more than enough information for you to be able to decide if the pair you found that you liked is worth the money. If those who wrote the reviews used them for the same activities that you intend do, then you are in luck. You can really apply their experiences to your decision. After reading some reviews, forget the model you were interested in at the store and do a separate search in the price range that you are hoping to stay within. With this knowledge, it is finally possible for you to figure out if the ones you liked at the store are really the ones for you.

The truth is, finding a pair of night vision goggles is very easy. Almost any department or specialty store has them in stock, and you can even find websites that sell them as well. But finding a pair or night vision goggles for sale that are of high quality can be a pain, and finding one that doesn't have a sky high price is even more difficult. Try not to jump on the first ones you come by. Doing some research can ensure that you do not waste your money, and that you will be picking up a good pair. Night vision goggles are too expensive and indispensable to make a mistake with, even once. - 31499

Inside Information on Air soft Guns

By Ethan O. Tanner

An Air soft gun is not a traditional BB gun. The traditional BB gun shoots out a .177 metal BB; Air soft guns shoot out 6mm plastic BB. The BBS that an Air soft gun shoots are slightly bigger and are not made of metal. The only thing that the two have in common is the fact that they resemble a real gun or weapon. Air soft guns are unable to shoot full auto like machine guns.

Some people assume them confused with paint ball guns. Paint balls are more single in design and do not resemble a actual gun. Paint balls are principally used for war games and they shoot plastic balls that filled with paint. The size of a paint ball gun are much larger than 6mm, about three times bigger. Paint guns shoot as an automatic gun, and not a single shot as an Air soft gun.

The Air soft gun initiated in Japan. People in Japan where fascinated in having their own gun, but the law prohibits them. Hunting And Hiking Gear Hints

By Ethan O. Tanner

Increasingly, people nowadays enjoy the simple, wholesome fun of hiking. Hiking is an inexpensive, yet healthy and emotionally rewarding way to spend a holiday or a long weekend - and you'll not break the bank to enjoy the outdoors.

Experienced hikers will all of the time tell you that every detail matters when you pack hiking gear, particularly tents and camping stoves. The right hiking gear and clothing, a properly and ergonomically packed backpack, positive mood and good fitness - all these elements play an equally important role in the success of any hiking trip.

Hiking boots are the most substantial part of your hiking gear. A quality pair of leather waterproof hiking boots are crucial. The right footwear will serve you longer and take you further and more dependable than any training shoes or sneakers will. You can wear a more affordable pair of pants or an old t-shirt, but a advantageous reliable pair of hiking shoes or boots should be as costly as you'll be able to afford.

Several people count their jackets as another crucial clothing item for a hiker, especially in the colder periods of the year. A hiking jacket can be a genuine lifesaver if you choose well. A Gore-Tex top layer will shield you from cold, wet, and breezy weather. Numerous hiking jacket manufacturers use a layering approach in their jackets, and so that an outer shell layer becomes not insulation, simply goes over insulating clothing. Underneath a Gore-Tex layer your can wear a lightweight and even fashionable fleece jacket, which you'll be able to use in warmer months and for other sporting activities too.

Hiking tents are a must if you plan to camp in mountain regions in all three hiking seasons - spring, summer, and fall. Hiking tents can be used for protection from storms, winds, small animals and insects. Along with a tent pack a sleeping bag and an insulating ground pad which also brings warmth as well as ironing out bumpy ground.

A lightweight, dependable backpacking stove is much easier to use than campfires which are often prohibited in certain areas. More expensive models even have electronic ignition so you won't need matches or lighter. Although it is always a good idea to pack matches anyway in case of ignition failure. Another version of a camping stove is a storm cooker which basically consists of a spirit burner with windshield and handle and a pot or pan for cooking. These stoves are lightweight because you don't need a propane container, but are sufficient for one or two people only.

The newest models of camping stoves are environmentally friendly, odor-free, and very accommodating. To cook and eat take a pot, spoon, and a cup. To start the camping stove, if you don't have an ignition feature, lighters are more reliable than matches. Take more fuel than you initially planned - camping stoves "eat" more fuel in cold weather.

To fully enjoy your hiking trip you must prepare beforehand. Even a small mistake in selecting your hiking equipment may outcome in an injury or at least in discomfort and a negative experience. Check and heat your camping stove while still at home and countercheck your hiking gear and equipment practicing a hiking checklist before you head out. - 31499

Thermal Vision Goggles For Outdoor Activities

By Frank Stevens

The first thing you think about when hearing the term thermal vision goggles is probably the latest spy or war movie. They are typically the subject of spies infiltrating bases and such, but they do have their real-life uses. In reality, these types of devices are used by soldiers or law-enforcement officers who use them for security and surveillance, while outdoor adventurers are also using them for activities such as hunting or camping.

There are two different types of night vision technology to chose from: thermal imaging and image enhancement. Image enhancement collects small amounts of light, including the lower portion of the infrared light spectrum, which is not generally visible to the human eye, and magnifies it so that surroundings can easily be seen.

Image enhancing models get light from the lower part of the light spectrum, while thermal vision goggles get light from the upper part of the spectrum. The light is emitted through the heat of an object and the goggles capture portions of the heat that is given off. The user sees the heat of the person or object, but does not get a clear image. The hotter the object, the more light is emitted and the easier the object will be seen. A living creature or human will give off more infrared light than something that is inanimate.

These types of goggles can come in head-equipped and handheld variations. The goggles may have a single lens or two eye pieces, though that depends on the model. A spotting scope for focusing in on a target is also a common feature. Goggles that strap to the head are the best choice when the activity requires you to move around often, they rest securely on the head and allow the hands to be free.

The other benefit to thermal imaging models is that the reflection of light is not required to see a living object in complete darkness. With the right kind of thermal vision goggles, you can see things in complete darkness or from very far away.

You can find several different models and styles, and usually need only two AA batteries to use. Thermal vision goggles can be found relatively inexpensively from outdoor, camping or online stores. These types of goggles are a great purchase for anyone who enjoys camping, hiking or hunting and they also can bring something new to an outing. - 31499

Deer Hunting Tips - What Conditions Affect Antler Size?

By John Eagleheart

Herd management is one of the most important deer hunting tips. The large antlered deer are prized among trophy hunters. The bigger the rack, the more valuable the prize. All proud hunters will swap tales of giant antlers, diameter, point count, etc. What is it that determines the size of the animal's antlers?

There are three main things that can influence buck antler size:

1. The Deer's Genetics

2. Nutrition

3. Age

Genetics determine how big the antlers might become. All experienced game managers or deer hunters know what is scientific truth: maximum antler size is largely determined by genetics. Sometimes, the best managed leases impose limits on how big an antler can be if it's to be harvested. A limit is put each season on genetically desirable prey and killing of genetically inferior antlered deer lets the gene pool move towards more favorable traits. Although there is some doubt regarding the benefit of these practices (effective killing of inferior antlered deer is sometimes impossible given the harvest rates to population in general), it has a genuinely good motive.

Nutrition is the next contributor to antler size. Regardless of a deer's genetic potential, it won't reach it's optimum level if it doesn't eat the right diet. Professional hunters have each gone through seasons with drought that's affected the natural food sources for deer, and they haven't found any with large antlers. In order for the deer population to realize it's complete antler producing potential, it has to eat a proper diet all year long. Summer and spring diets are the most vital since the majority of antler growth really happens during those seasons. Bad forage conditions throughout this time can negatively effect antler growth. Good habitat management will help promote healthy nutritional options. Sometimes, it's necessary to implement additional feeding.

The final factor is age, however research suggests that once a buck has reached 3+ years of age genetics and nutrition play a larger part in antler growth. The size of the antler tends to increase greatly during the first few years of age and then to level off sometime between the fourth to sixth year depending on the breed and its genetics. For this reason, the harvesting of bucks younger than 4 years is not encouraged. The practice by insensitive hunters of culling bucks that are too young can lead to such colorful expressions from more experienced hunters as, "That deer still had milk on its breath." It is best overall to harvest only the mature bucks. If you are in need of venison and a mature buck is not in evidence then harvest a doe. The hunt next season will reap the benefit. - 31499
